I went to a satellite dealer today to try the new echostar satellite internet, not like direct-pc this pupppy is downloading and uploading via the dish. So I went to 3dfiles.com and proceeded to download the latest patch for half-life(69mb)looked like it started up alittle slow then it kicked in gear averaging about 39.5 kbps. I was wondering if anyone tried this thing for gaming yet?? I will go there soon to download Kali just to checkout the ping times from servers.

Sounds good if you lived in the backwoods mountains or isolated in Montanna...but the ping is depending on the signal propagation to the sattellite and back times 2.

In other words, very high ping.

How much is it ?
What are the monthly fees ?
Is it actually out officially ?

I am very intersested because my area may not get cable or dsl for a while because our area is a low priority because it's mainly families.

I was very excited about this technology until I did a little research. I read an article the other day, I beleive at zdnetworks pages, that the minimum ping will be about 480ms, because the laws of physics say that it takes a radio signal 120ms to reach 22,200 feet, so multiply that by 4 and you have 480, not even adding any time from the net itself. Thats why it probably seemed to start slowly then speed up after a second.
So while it will give high speed net access to anyone, for gaming you might as well have a 33.6 modem.. cause thats what I have, and I get 450 pings almost all the time. not very playable. If anyone has any updated info that changes this, I would love to hear it. my only option for high speed access is idsl, which is 144kbps... better than a 33.6 though!

Lucky for me I'm not a big ONLINE gamer. I do have a couple loaded on my computer but the love of video games has left me a long time ago. That was back in the day of Pacman.

Since I didn't sign an NDA:

I have tested the system personally, and wasn't too impressed. At a recent Microsoft convention I talked to an MSN Representative about Gilat, since MSN will be the largest ISP for Gilat. He talked about 400 KiloByte/sec downloads with 1000 KBps burst rates, not 400 Kilobits/sec. I verified to make sure.

Now a couple of weeks later, I have actually tested the system. The average download on the test system was 29.2 KiloBytes/sec. Much better than 56k modem, but definitely not what I consider "high speed access". I then pinged a couple of common websites, such as download.com and yahoo.com. The pings averaged 550-700 millisecond.

Needless to say, I'm really glad two-way cable will be in my area before year's end.

That's fast voogru, you should be able to get pretty good download speeds for sites if that is for real. I'm interested but haven't seen any prices on what the equipment will cost and what the monthly fee will be.

I also wonder what the REAL speed will be once alot of people sign up. I mean you figure they only have so much bandwith and more people means it will run slower.

how do you become a beta tester????? I have been a dishnetwork customer for 2 years, and never heard of a beta program.. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif
in my previous post I mentioned that I was very dissappointed about the ping, but, I only get a 28.8 connection now anyway, so I alread y have that ping.. if I cannot get cable here in a month or so, I am thinking of trying it out, either that or idsl, 144kbps, thats like 70 bucks a month, but faster than a 28.8.. not sure what to do...

The beta offer from dishnetwork was
1 500 celeron computer with the dish/lnb
all set up, they would take care of the install, $600 and 6 months free service.

They had hoped to have a larger number of users per transponder, but have found that they would need to cut that in half or more to support a reasonable d/l-u/l speed.
I dont know if this will change the price for the end user. I havent seen any monthly price in print as of yet.

Still looking at a last 1/4 to a 1st 1/4 release.

the bandwith "may" improve if/when the new
"Spot Beam" sats are in orbit (2002).

A website that has some news on Gilat is www.skyreport.com (http://www.skyreport.com)

I still wonder if they will have a "FAP" like DirecPc has.
