Here we go....I am considering upgrading to a DDR mobo. I currently am running a 1 gig Tbird 200fsb with 2x256 pc133 and 1x128 pc133 at cas 2. (Total of 640 megs) If I upgrade to a DDR board probably the max memory I can afford up front is a stick of 256 DDR. Basically my question is will I get better (bandwidth)performance (benches and gaming) from 256 megs of DDR or 640 megs of SDR?

if you have 640 mb RAM your probably wouldnt see any difference. You might even take a performance hit. I i can remember correctly DDR only provides about a 10% increase. So, mabey 640mb of DDR would make a difference but it seems like you would take a performance drop by only getting 256mb

what operating system are you running?
if you are running win2000 or xp it will utilize more memory then any win 9x os.

Basically 256 mb of ddr as opposed to 640 mb of sdram is plenty. If you are running games and doing alot of benching etc. you will get better performance from the ddr. Bascially going with 256 mb of ddr will be a performance increase. This is due to the fact that ddr is about 20% better performer than sdram (most times even more) and that your 640 mb of sdram is never fully utilized.

Okay two different points of view... anyone validate either one of these?

Running 98se.

I'd stay with 640MB of SDR SDRAM. Sure, "DDR" sounds nice, but ... you'll only get up to 10% increase, and that only in apps which work with memory intensively.
Yet, Win98SE can't work with more that 512MB of RAM effectively.
I'm perfectly happy with my Abit KT7A and 256MB PC133 Micron Cas2, very well tuned system. Money isn't a big problem for me so I could easily upgrade with KR7A (KT266A) and 256MB Crucial Cas2 DDR, but what for ?
Donno, it's up to you ;)

I thought that PC 133 SDRAM pumps data at 1.2 Gigs of data per sec and the DDR pumps @ 2.1 Gigs of data per sec and the 800 mhz RDRAM pumps 3.2 Gigs per sec:rolleyes:  Maybe I was drunk at the point when I was lookin for mem info.

Can someone clarify the data pumped per sec by the most used mem.:o

 :D

PC133 - ~1.1GB/s
PC1600 (PC200) - 1.6GB/s
PC2100 (PC266) - 2.1GB/s
PC600 RDRAM - 2.4GB/s
PC800 RDRAM - 3.2GB/s

Thank you ND I guess I wasn't too drunk. It sucks heh:mad: (RDRAM) or maybe it's the pentium cpu not really gettin with the ram.expensive ohhh:mad: I happen to have it by the way:(
