I'm building a new system and can't decide what kind of RAM to get. Good quality or generic stuff. Also how big are the differences between them? (And the 6,7,8ns timings?)

I also haven't decided the amount of ram I want. I do heavy multitasking. Outook 98, 10-15 IE5 Windows, Photoshop 5.0. And gaming on the side. I'm looking at two 128MB PC 100 DIMMS or four of them.

New System Specs :

NT 4.0 and 98 on another boot for games.
ATX Case, 300W
Tekram Dual CPU Slot 1 Board, with Pentium III 450MHz (Planning to add second CPU when ever W2k arrives... because of "a" money issue hehe)
Hitachi SUPERSCAN ELITE 751 19"(18).22MM
Viper V770 TNT2 32MB Ultra
Sound Blaster Live!
SoundWorks FourPointSurround FPS2000
Tekram DC-390U2W (SCSI Card...)
IBM 4.5GB ULTRASTAR 9ES WIDE ULTRA2 SCSI
IBM 22GB DESKSTAR 22GXP ULTRA ATA/66
Pioneer Slot 40x CD-ROM Drive - SCSI 2
Microsoft Intelimouse (From Old System)
IBM PS/2 Keyboard (From Old System)
USR V.60 56K Fax Modem Ext. (From Old Sytem)
Zip Drive - SCSI2 (From Old System)

I will consider better the speed than the "brand name". If you are looking for pc-100, get the fastest, 8 nanoseconds or less with a cas latency of "2". Your supplier will tell you right away. In my system I have different brand names such as Nec, Kingston, Toshiba, Siemmens, etc. If you need more info, check at Kingston memories website.

Study the SDRAM Review at www.bxboards.com (http://www.bxboards.com) . Then study it again.

Start with two 128s and see how they run. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Assuming your mobo supports pc133 ram and you're spending that much $ anyway, go ahead and spring for the newest sticks. You won't have to upgrade later.

my 2 cents

If you plan on OC Cas2 for sure
I would always be cautious of lowest priced vender advertised on pricewatch or any other site. I think the frustration, time and money you will spend (if you have a problem with the product)will more than offsets the savings. As far as RAM venders- i feel Mushkin is safe. Thier prices are definitly not the lowest-. Hope i didnt "muddy the waters too much"

Get 128mb cas2 Micron -8e w/3rd party pcb. $80 + 10 frt at AGP Computer. ph 888.383.8247. See PriceWatch.
I have used these dimms to 117mhz buss speed at cas2 setting on Abit boards and have read they go much higher.
How can you go wrong? They were selling for twice as much just a few months ago!

I have an intel 440bx motherboard and am using a p2-350mhz overclocked at 392mhz. I was wondering if pc133 sdram would run on my motherboard.

Thanks Roy! I tried to say the same thing in a response to Socalgal, but did not know where I read that.

To All ~ I strongly recommend you trade in your opinions for some knowledge. See my post above.

bigslammer ~ PC133 likely will run at higher and surely at lower speeds.

cobain1crt ~ What's your point with the "generic!" reply? You told Joel you would try to be articulate. Did you mean "Generic, OK"? or "Generic, oh oh."? Also, there is no PC100 ram rated below Tclk=8ns!

I have generic pre-PC100 SDRAM that is good at 112. My generic PC100 CL2 is tested at 133.

Again, study BxBoards' SDRAM Survey. Punch through the vendors' hype. www.bxboards.com (http://www.bxboards.com)
