no matter which brand of speakers i use, sound only comes out of one speaker. yes, i've checked all connections and everything's plugged in properly. brand new motherboard, not a soundcard issue........just sound only from the left speaker.

what do u think?

it's me again......sigh

Just a suggestion, but are all the speakers you're testing on this system having the speaker problem on the same side? If it is, it could also be quite possible that the soundcard speaker out jack is not making a good contact due to particles or because it's worn out. Try cleaning the sound card speaker out jack with some alcohol and see if this helps before going out and spending money on a new speaker...

Why would you want to purchase another set of speakers if:no matter which brand of speakers i use, sound only comes out of one speaker
You could just try head phones or something else.
If its not your speakers then it must be your sound card.
How do you know its not a sound card issue? What steps did you take to prove that its not a sound card issue? Did you try another sound card?
I am with NDC. If you have tried other speakers and get the same problem I would think the speaker out jack on the sound card has a problem. BUT, you said it isnt a sound card issue.

You might simply need a new stereo cable to connect the speakers to the card. Mine was making a bad connection before; sometimes I would lose a channel, then it would come back. I replaced the cable>>>> Problem solved!! :)

Maybe the cable that comes from the sound card needs to be replaced.

Have you been using the same cable to convert to RCA from the sound card?

Is this with all sounds or just cd music from your cdrom?

Once upon a time I plugged a set of speakers into the wrong hole and it blew out one channel of the sound system on a board with onboard sound. Then I only had sound from one speaker. Does any of this sound familiar to you?

I had that problem once, it turned out to be a lot of dust in the soundcard socket, give it a good blow (no pun intended ).

Iv'e had a jack that was broken and I had to pull out the connector just a little bit to get it to play both speakers. Just a thought.:)

If it is a jack problem, try wriggling it around, flexing the cable, etc. Happens all the time with my setup.

seems I remember a time when there had to be an adaptor if you used a sb soundcard. I remember a plug adaptor that had a little different spacing that usual. what type of shoud card and speakers?

i'll try blowing dust out and messing with the jack.
the adapter is brand new and fine.
the computer came with jbl speakers, and a lovely integrated sound box with the basic mic, line, i/o standard.

thanks for everyone's help

hrm... intergrated sound eh. suggestion: if you have a soundcard available to you, disable your on board sound, install the soundcard, and see if you have the same problem. sounds like you have a problem with your on board sound controller (this is why i hate buying a mobo with anything intergrated on it!)
