My 12GB hard drive woke me up about 2 AM making all kind of high speed whiring noise along with clattering. I tried to wake the system but it would not respond, so I turned off my power strip. The next day when I went to use the system it could not find the OS. I took the system apart and there was a hole burned through one of the chips. I bought a new hard drive 40GB and formated it. When I shut down the hard drive stays on and the heads clatter so now I turn off my power strip to shut it off, but I'm afraid that this has something to do with getting that SIrcam32 virus about 3 days before my hard drive was put in to overdrive. I'm running win98 and have down loaded all the patches from MS that they have and it's still doing it. can any one help?????

just a thought. have you tried a new power supply???
maybe try plugging the pc directly into the wall instead of a possibly defective powerstrip as well. it just sound to me like a
power issue and not a virus. good luck.

I've not tried a new power supply yet, but the hard drive will be off when I start to shut down. As the system starts to shut down it checks the cd rom drive, the a: drive, then it starts the hard drive and never finishes shutting down. The hard drive light stays lit at about half brightness and I can hear the drive spinning if you wait about 1min the heads start moving it sounds like they are going stop to stop and hitting hard.
