Yeah, good effort. Only comment I have is that why should a terrorist like Osama bin Laden be shown on the same picture as Uncle S ?

Interesting, but how do YOU know its him (Osama Bin Ladin) ?.
club_med - Osama Bin Ladin is an international terrorist. Saudia Arabia has a $400 million reward for is head. Reguardless if he is responsible for this tragedy, we know he is responsible for the first WTC bombing and the US embassy bombings and the attack on the USS Cole in Yemen and several other acts of terror. The man is nothing but a murderer. He has the blood of countless others on his hands. And in my opinion, a quick death is too good for that coward.

Maybe you have not seen been personally involved with an act of terror.(that is your good fortune) I lost a good friend in the Oklahoma City bombing. From then on, I have taken a dim view of terrorism. I have stood at the top of the WTC towers. America will NEVER be the same again. Vengance will be had for the THOUSANDS of dead Americans. We will send a message to all terrorists that this kind of action will not be tolerated. Justice is comming for Bin Laden.

I disagree with your post there for 2 reasons.

1. Russia is currentally in a situation where the mafia is running the country. The current President of Russia is the former head of the KGB. The mafia bosses are all former high ranking KGB officals. Right now Russia currentally fits the guidelines that you laid out to breed terrorism, however Russia isn't destroying American landmarks and thousands of people. There has been a strong outpouring of sympathy for "the west" from the starving Russian people.

2. Your fix for getting rid of terrorism is for the world to become a utopian society, where the rulers are just and the people are all happy and well fed. That is a lovely dream, but it will not happen in our lifetime.

There will always be the threat of terrorism. There is only one defence for it. You must prove that the potiental punishment will be so terrible that no one would dare to try.

The people of Russia are suffering as much if not more than the people in the middle east. In about a month, people will begin to freeze to death. No, not only homeless bums on the street, but teachers and doctors in their homes that have no heat. The teachers, if they do get paid, it is in vodka. I was there not 4 months ago. I spoke with the people. They are destitute.

America has always had a stance that is doesn't ever negotiate with hostage situations. If they ever did, that would open up America to anyone taking a hostage, becaus they would know that we would pay. This is the same situation. Unless we react VIOLENTLY, just as the terrorists did, we will have sent a message to the world that the United States of America is an open target.

Your solution the the terrorist problem is straight from an after school special. Yes, the world would be wonderful if it was created by Walt Disney, but it isn't. Your naivety on this is unbelieveable. If we kill Bin Laden, he will never murder another person. We must show that anyone who would attempt to harm the United States would be a fool for their death would not be far.

KAknight, please concede that club_med has some valid points here. We as Americans need to rethink everything in light of this. As hard as it may be we must try to step outside ourselves and be objective.

As I have posted in another thread, even if it were possible to round up and execute every single terrorist today, the next generation of them would be born starting tomorrow. Obviously some of them do not fear death.

It is NOT un-American to take a step back and be objective.

Club_med, we do not know that bin Laden is responsible in this case. However he is absolutely a terrorist and is unquestionably responsible for many deaths, including Americans. He declared war on the US a few years ago. At that time, I don't think very many of us even knew who he was. Now he will be taken seriously. I don't think the people will accept anything short of his death.

First off, cool avatar Scorpio

Second, all I am trying to say is that the terrorist threat cannot be effectively solved. There will always be terrorism. Someone will always be unhappy with the way things are. The only defense America has against future attacks is to either withdraw itself from the world completely and close its borders OR show that the crime isn't worth the punishment. My views might be offensive to others, but MY country grants me the right to express my views. I would die to protect that right for me and you.

Ask any of the orfan children or widowed wives in New York. They will say that Captain Ahab(Moby Dick) had a point. Revenge will come. The majority of American people demand it.

Thanks. I kinda dig it. I can't even remember where I got it. It was on a CD I burned a while back. Yours is pretty cool too.

Now, as far as your last comment goes, that's a very offensive statement. 'Nuff said.

I personally believe that a Utopian society is unattainable, at least for our generation. That doesn't mean we shouldn't try.

We are at war, and many people will certainly die. We must do whatever we can to try to change whatever circumstances lead to the type of evil we have seen with these attacks, or they will recur.

I have never said anything about beginning carpet bombing countries. That would result in loss of civillian life. That is not acceptable. That reason is what seperates us from the terrorists. I believe that we will never be able to kill the root, only that we might be able to keep the branches as small as possible. If the United States responds to this by giving in to the terrorist demands that we change our policies in the middle east we will only open ourselves up to more acts of terrorism by people/countries that want to get their way. I understand your point completely. All I was saying that your solution is not possible in today's society. Hopefully one day, but certainly not in the near future. We could debate this point back and forth for hours. We just disagree.

I liked the original post, and I think that the crux of the matter is the friction between wanting to take strong action to preclude further terrorist acts, and being above resorting to violence.

Unfortunately, I don't think these people respond to anything except violence. They see us as a manifestation of everything that is wrong with their world. I don't think any amount of diplomacy will change that.

So, I say stick a nuclear bomb up Bin Laden's @ss and those who help him ...

(P.S. I don't believe for a minute that Bin Laden didn't do it because he told the Taliban so.)
