I got such distressing performance at less than 9mbps for my ATA-33 interface which is the default found on my mainboard as it's using the all time stable and long lasting Intel BXi440 chipsets.

Well, the peak performance for ATA33 is 33mbps, I guess you're just using some old HD :(

I got this 20GB seagate 7200rpm harddisk and i tested it with sisoft and hd tach software. what i got was a mere 7mbps read!!!! what the hell!!!! can anyone solve my problem???

Did you checked DMA box in your hd properties? It should be checked :)

Hi,
my HDD WD Caviar 6.4GB (ata66 compliant)
When i disable ATA66, on ATA33 the datarate
is 27MB/s.

When ATA66 is enabled, datatransfer is about
36MB/s

Another hdds (ATA66 only):
WD 20GB 7200rpm, 55 MB/s
Seagate 15GB, 5400rpm 49MB/s
**All on ABIT HOTROD ATA66 or ATA100 adapter**
Seagate 15GB, 5400rpm 9MB/s
--this is ona Ali1621 ATA33, PC100 board--

may I add, that it has also nothing to do with the true performance of the hard drive.

Expect your WD 20GB 7200rpm to be at least twice as fast as your WD Caviar 6.4GB. Burst speed is irrelevant.

What gives the feeling of speed is the access time. Depending on the use, access time and STR determine the performance of the drive (this is put in a very simplistic way).
