Question:

Would the AMD "Hammer" (K8's Official Name is unknown as I can speak) be a Socket A Processor? I know that current Athlons and Durons (including the Duron Morgan) are Socket A and I'm just wondering of the Hammers will be Socket A or not. I'm realizing that with Intel's chips, you have to get a newer motherboard because Intel usually initiates newer socket forms whereas AMD makes upgrading easy by using upgrader-friendly sockets.

Anyway, is Hammer going to be a Socket A? If not, then is AMD going to take advantage of a new socket technology?

will Linux Mandrake 8.0 still work?

the only reason it's taken them so long has been because they're making the 64 bit cpu's backward compatible with 32 bit software. they should ROCK! i wanna be in the line when they're handing out these babies. AMD RULE!

The AMD Hammer should be really good, as it can do 32-bit instructions by hardware, unlike Intel's Itanium which can't do 32-bit instructions by hardware (i think).

amd is going to sell a lot of tbird's. no one (maybe the entire planet), is going to want to leave behind their 32bit software, and move to 64bit right away. amd is going to win on this. am i right? intel, is like, is creating a new os (64bit) and not making drivers for it...

"perhaps sampling" = is sampling

No kidding, as K8 silicon is available according to close sources at AMD. However, none would discuss the current state (alpha, beta, etc,) of development. It is assumed that the current samples are Clawhammer-based, as Sledgehammer is a multi-core chip which requires more extensive fabrication techniques.

AMD was initially supposed to release the K8 this year according to close sources, but it appears design efforts in regards to the K7 were supercedient for improved market visibility against stiff competition within the mainstream desktop segment.

Any rate, any new tech offered with the K7 (such as hardware preftech with the A4) can be implemented with the K8 as well, as the x86-64 archtitecture is readily suited for instant scalability in terms of shared technology between the rather similar architectures.

Looks to me like a real good time to buy some shares of AMD stock.

"The AMD x86-64 technology will deliver unsurpassed 32-bit performance in Windows computing while enabling a seamless transition to 64-bit computing."

God does love us. AMD better not wait to long, or Intel will brain wash the market with the minor advancements in GHzs.

As regards 32-bit compatibility, from previous reading I remember that AMD will be hardware compatible, while Intel will use a software conversion, which of course will sap power for any 32-bit operations.

AMD stock price is trending lower as we speak. If the optimism in this thread is correct, a purchase after the stock bottoms would be in order.

The new chip will NOT be Socket-A, but will run 32-bit code at least as fast as a T-bird of the same speed, and likely faster. All existing 32-bit applications should work perfectly.

This is the same route Intel took with the 386, which supported both 16 and 32-bit code.

For those interested in AMD's x86-64 architecture, I recommend referencing this article here at SysOpt:

I noticed that the article made mention of AMD's marketing department. I am pretty sure that AMD does not have a marketing department. Either that or it is a very closely guarded secret.
