Seems like a lot to pay for a company that has slim margins. I don't see the point.

Well i work for HP in the tech side for the home users and this is going to be very scary in the next few years to see where HP and Compaq are gona go with this company now.

Hewlett-Compaqard? http://www.sysopt.com/news/gws/cdata/smile.gif

Hopefully they'll stick with the HP desktops over the compaqs! If I worked at either of these companies I'd be very worried http://www.sysopt.com/news/gws/cdata/frown.gif
As the articles mention both businesses are quite similar and the overlap between the two will be enormous. There will be much shedding of "extra weight" http://www.sysopt.com/news/gws/cdata/frown.gif

Without the competition between the two, the typical uneducated computer buyer won't have many choices when he/she goes to Best Buy or similar store. What you will find on the shelves will probably be a computer that combines all the worst features of the current HP and Compaq machines - all in one package. (now that's a scary thought)

Like just about everyone at sysopt I wouldn't touch either brand with someone elses 10 foot pole. Junk breeds more junk!

Well folks ...... it happened.....

I live in Houston and the passage below is from one of out top newspapers, Houston Chronicle (www.houstonchronicle.com):

"Houston-based Compaq Computer Corp. is being acquired by Hewlett-Packard Co. in a $25 billion stock deal. The merged company will be based in Hewlett-Packard's home in Palo Alto, Calif., but will maintain a significant presence in Houston, which company officials said will be a center of engineering and product development. The merger will result in 15,000 layoffs, and the Compaq brand will go away."

I am afraid that these greedy idiots are digging their own graves. If they lay off all these people (potential customers), who the hell would have money to but the **** the new company makes?????????

And people laugh at me when i say the economy is just reaching the waterfall.

Analysts are wondering why. HP and Compaq are in the same industry. HP has announced that the Compaq name will go away, so how does that hurt loyal Compaq customers (if there are any)? Also, HP has already announced layoffs (Compaq will too), and HP is keeping its headquarters. HP is probably going to sell some manufacturing sites and other Compaq buildings (Compaq has a lot in Houston). Lots of questions to be answered on this one, I would not buy stock in either company myself.

Hmmm..that's why HP laid off 5000+ plus workers last quarter! They needed the cash. Now they're going to lay off a bunch of Compaq workers. I wish HP would stop shooting its own foot...they're bringing us down with them by hurting the market. It's greed like this that collectivly causes recessions.

It's just like their printers. They spend a lot of time and money to physically make a longer lasting and better performing printer just to end up screwing it all up by writing an overbloated printing OS driver system that, if it works, will hog at least 10% of your resources. (why does a print driver need to be 20 MB+?)
