Here is my situation..
no matter what I do.. I cannot get my outlook 2000 program to connect to my email server from @home to check my mail, unless I install outlook on my server pc.
The server pc is the one connected to the modem and the others are connected through a hub is it is kinda understandable to only work on that computer. But does anyone know how to get around this... a program or anything would help http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
btw, my @home mail servers are wierd all they are.
incoming : mail
oucoming : mail
So... Mail.. is my server, or something does anyone know the server?? I have tried mail.home.com, my ip address, etc..

actually that's not too wierd at all since @home is not a dial in connection but more like being connected via a LAN. i know what you mean, but i think they aren't using URLs but machine names or something they have setup through a WINS server or whatever.
sorry i'm not much help - don't know a thing about @home but i'm willing to lay money the server addy's are correct. when i ping the usual (pop3.home.com, pop.home.com, mail00.home.com, etc.) there's no response, although you might just want to try home.com.
so if i've got this straight you're saying that if outlook is installed on the server it works, and if you remove it it doesn't?
what would probably be most helpful (for someone who does know better than i) is an error message....

I've got @Home and my POP3 server and SMTP are mail.valpo1.in.home.com
Depending on how they set it up for you (if you have a dynamic IP or static), you can check in your TCP/IP settings. Mine used to be static and the server was the host under DNS Configuration. Now that it's dynamic, I don't need that info in there.
If you are set up as dynamic IP, I suggest you take a look at the work order to install the service, or any trouble call work order. The server should be listed under SUB in the body of the form, at least mine is. They should also have listed mail and news, which describes what to put in front of the server.
For example, under Mail(MAL) it says mail, and under News(NEW) it says news. So in my Outlook settings, I put mail. in front of the server name. I would suggest that yours is the same seeing as we have the same provider just in different area.

This works for me....
Goto your conneted station and bring up a DOS box. Ping mail and note the IP address. Use this IP address instead of "mail" and your Outlook should work!

6pac's method will undoubtedly work... but there's one thing you should be aware of:
when it comes to mail servers any major provider will use multiple servers. the same URL (mail.servername.com) will point to numerous IP addresses. this way they can control traffic and prevent 1 machine from getting bombarded at once. the 2nd reason for this is redundancy - if a server goes down or is taken down for 'maintenance' another server will pick up the work and there will be no loss in service. therefore using an IP address may result in occasional downtime or occasional slow connections. if you're provider is good you'll never see it happen, but i thought i'd share anyway.
if you want to see what i'm talking about go to a dos prompt and ping cnn.com. do it a second time and you'll see 2 different IPs. in this instance it's a www server, but same idea.

Thanks guys!
Ya, if I install on my server pc it works, if I install on another pc it won't.....
it is a static ip.... so if I find the ip it is going after for the mail... then I should be fine.. hmmmmm will have to try that out... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
thanks, if anyone else has some good ideas please send them away http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
