I completely agree, after I found google I have not needed to do a search on another engine. Its superfast and always returns great matches.

I know a lot of people use google. I use hotbot i've been using it for a while now. I know its not very accurate but I like the fact that you can specify if the site should include video, mp3, or pictures. I will probably make the change to google soon though, eh maybe ill use both.

I used to use Hotbot. It came out shortly before Google and I liked Hotbot's features for advanced searches. I got tired of not fidign things, so I moved to Copernicus, a third party search program that searches many different search engines. This gave me loads of info, but it included all of the shortcomings of the different (lots of advertisements, lots of pron, etc). Then I hearda bout Google (a few months after it hit the scene) and have used it exclusively ever since. It is a phenomenal tool and is the closest any site has come to truly cataloging the web.

I myself have never directly used google, but I am loyal to a search engine called c4.com that uses all the major search engines, with google included, and so far c4 is the best I've used. C4.com is not flashy but it sure gets results. You can even use questions in your searches. But, I will give google a try to see for my self how good is it.

I have used goolge tons and found it to be very useful, but IMHO I think that www.alltheweb.com (http://www.alltheweb.com) is faster and a little better, and that is what I now use. http://www.sysopt.com/news/gws/cdata/smile.gif

I use Dogpile (http://www.dogpile.com) for the majority of my web based searches. Google is perfectly fine for most users, but I personally do not like the interface.

Google wins hands down. I cannot see any shortcomings when using Google. It has also taken over Deja news recently. Now you can search Newsgroup archives with Google. There are caches of every page, which have come in handy. Recently they have added a translation button for pages in other languages. Someone at Google is doing there homework. Nothing beats Google.

Two questions:
1- Google has recently added an image search option. It appears quite good, I haven't used any other image search engine. Is there one that is better? Image searches are awesome for comp parts.
2- When will Google go public. I'm dying to buy some shares.

I've been using Yahoo for several years, I dont know, I just like the name of it. I have tried Google before, I just never really paid attention to the speed of it. From now on I think I will use it, if I can get Yahoo out of my mind http://www.sysopt.com/news/gws/cdata/smile.gif

Yahoo uses the google system to run it's searches on the web page level (not web SITE, yahoo differintiates). i've noticed sometimes if i do a search with yahoo, the webpage name is google.yahoo.com

just an interesting tidbit...:9

btw, i use yahoo as well, becuase thats where i've set up my personal version they offer, yes others offer that too, but i made mine there and i'm not setting up another one...hehehehe

I used to use the Ferret...
It started to use ZD/Net and C/Net too often, to find anything...

In the several years I have been on the net, there has been very little I could not find.

I didn't like Google, when it came out, and have found no reason to try it, again.

(I have never understood how or why anyone used 'Jeeves' since it never found anything that was past its portal.)

What do I use? www.alltheweb.com (http://www.alltheweb.com)

Has more pages found. Maybe not as pretty as some, but, I don't look for the easy to find. (If needed, there is always infoplease to find the idiot answers... or the dictionaries). I generally look for things you would not find in a simple search of 300,000 web sites. (300,000,000 is a bit more looking, and closer to keeping up w/10% of the web)

I don't think this is news. It's more of a question.

Yes I like google. It's the only search engine I use. Saying that, I haven't really used many others before! What really draws me to google is it's fast, it doesn't have all the distracting graphics, it lets you try your querry at other search engines without you having to retype it all, and the site I want is almost always one of the first few it comes up with!

Spanky
06-26-2001, 12:51 AM
Yep I use it daily, I used to use Hotbot but I find google WAY faster and just plain better, I also like the way its lite on the graphics and stuff.

I type full sentence questions into it all the time an am constantly amazed that it found what I was looking for.

I also love that it corrects my spelling for me and gives me a link to those hits LOL.

I've installed the google plugin into IE and it rocks, Ya just type in your search into an address bar like pulldown. It saves your last 15 searches or so. Or highlight a word or phrase and right click and select google search.

I also love the cached pages option.

Yeah okay so it isn't news, but finding stuff on the web is paramount to getting a use out of it and I think it's important that everyone know about the best engines out there.

I use Google about 80% of the time. Seing the seeked words in their context is quite useful.

But 20% of the time, I have to use Altavista instead. Why ? For two reasons :

1. Altavista queries allow to easily specify which words MUST be there (+) and which others we would just LIKE to be there (no +). This may be important, for instance if you use synonyms in your query to improve your chances, while not requiring the two synonyms to be present at the same time in the document.

2. The trailing "*" is honoured by Altavista (automati* = automatic, automation, automatize...), and I have not been able to get results with it on Google (I am not a Google expert, nor an Alta vista one, though)

www.profusion.com (http://www.profusion.com) is my preferred choice for a search engine. They have a new version out @ http://beta.profusion.com wich has very accurate searches. I used to use Hotbot and only rarely have used google.

I have to agree, Google is the only search engine I use now. AskJeeves used to be good, but always came up with reference to something totally obscure (usally MP3s, and form previously unheard of engines.
As Scott says the thing is incredibly fast, and thorough, to such an extent if Google wont find it I dont even try another engine.

FDArmingaud, you can use the +"word" and -"word" to get results that must(+) include the word or must not(-) contain the word.

However, Google does not use a wildcard. I don't remember exactly why, but they have their reasons.

I've had Google set up as my home page for coupl'o years now. Seems half the time when I sign on I'm looking for something anyway. It loads fast (I'm still on 56K) and doesn't churn me with ads and stuff like Yahoo or so many others.

Dogpile's my backup, but darned if I don't find pretty much everything on Google first anyway.

IPO? I'll be there (unless I forget, gettin' old, ya know)

just my 2 cents...

toolbar.google.com

Add a Google Search Toolbar to your IE.
The box is always up, and its a quick download. Just click there type in and press enter and itll forward you to the google page with that search.

Google is the most popular around my college for good reason. I never heard of it before college, but I used it once and it wow'ed me. No fluff, No waiting, just searching, plain and simple.
And it does that very well. I use it for every day stuff as well. Actually I dont use any other search engines anymore I used to cycle thru the 6 that come with IE, but dont need to anymore.
Helped me on numerous research papers as well. Whoever made Google had us in mind. Who wants to know thier results got returned in 0.11 seconds? Us, of course.

RayH
06-27-2001, 06:52 AM
I know I could use a Google Toolbar, but using it as a HOMEPAGE is better for me.

First, I have a single toolbar on my screen. I don't want another row cluttering up my screen.

Secondly, I usually want to hit the search when I'm on a given site and want more information about the subject. I then open another browser and Google is on the screen.

Thirdly, I'm not otherwise particular about any page being my homepage.

Google is our family's home page. Loads very quickly and very easy to locate everything we need. Is there a faster site?

We were big Infoseek fans but it got slower and slower as it added ads, then of course died a well deserved death.

From what I understand about Google it is that they are using 64bit processing to execute thier searches. So they can index twices as many pages as the leading search engine and still get the results back quicker than any other engine out there. Google smokes em all

Yeh, Google is the place to go first. I use Alta Vista when it gets technical, and Northern Light always gives me something unusual, different from the rest.

I realy like Google too. But my very favorits engine in my opinion is the now hard-to-find Go Express. Originally from Infoseek, but shelved by Disney/Go.com.

It's all a matter of preferences, and mine is just another opinion..

Scott-
Google is good, but I prefer to use the meta-
search engine called "dogpile" at dogpile.com. It searches a dozen (or more) engines and then lists the linked results for you to evaluate. Works for me.

It is the best that I've used, BUT what about Copernic, it can search 8+ search engines and more.
Also choose an alternative language to search in.
The FREE version is limited but still very useful and quick.
The Professional version is more powerful and not expensive.
see www.copernic.com (http://www.copernic.com)

Yep, Google's the one for me. I used to swear by AltaVista, then they had a major problem with business focus. I still sometimes miss the ability to refine better the search, but most of the time, it's OK, because Google manages to only find the relevant ones anyway.

If I really have a hard time finding something, Dogpile will search 'em all for me.

Google.com is the BEST. If I can't find it at google in my first trial, I usually still can't find it after spending another hour on other search engines.

Test Google out yourself for pure research objectivity. Try plugging in "Best Search Engine", and you can go on for pages without Google bragging, or even mentioning themselves. I DARE you to try that with Yahoo or Alta Vista. Also discover why they call it Google by plugging in "number math Google"; within the first two pages you get two relevant hits, and that's even with the mispelling. Google is SUPREME, and a researcher's dream (poetry fully intended, so e-shoot me, Trogs :-p) I haven't been with another Search Engine since. Always Faithful to my Google.

I've settled on Google after using Dogpile, Northern Lights and many others. As a Netscape user, I keep the following string (labelled "Google") in my Personal Toolbar; when I highlight text and click the toolbar button, Google does a search on the text. Very clever, but I can't recall where I found it.

javascript:q=document.getSelection();for(i=0;i<fra mes.length;i++){q=frames[i].document.getSelection();if(q)break;}if(!q)void(q= prompt('Enter text to search using Google. You can also highlight a word on this web page before clicking Google Search.',''));if(q)location.href='http://www.google.com/search?client=googlet&q='+escape(q)

Agree with all the plaudits for google but have one question:

Can anyone tell me how to setup Internet Explorer so that the search button pops up Google?

I used to use Hotbot before Google and had the same problem.

Since I was introduced to Google, by a colleage. I have had nothing but SUCCESS in searching for straight to the point of source information I have requested. In my profession of Information Management, I am constantly searching for the answers of nagging questions with no answers. In the majority most search engines I get beat up by all the advertisements and still can't get the information I've requested. Now with GOOGLE, I can see when someone(s) has their ACT TOGETHER. Keep up the GOOD Work.

I'm also fond of Google. I like to do searches from the Address bar (Netscape calls it the Location bar, I believe). IE allows you can customize Address bar searches so you can search with various engines from the address bar, but Google isn't one of them (I usually choose Yahoo). However you can download a little program called Powertweaks from Microsoft (http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10068-100-906446.html?st.dl.search.results.tdtl) that puts a little program called Quick Search on your Links bar. QS enables you to define your own searches from the address bar. So I only need to type "g subject" at the address bar to do a Google search without having to load Google's web page first.
I believe Mozilla allows you to use Google to search from the Location bar. But I only use Mozilla (or Netscape, for that matter) when I'm on a Linux machine (I prefer IE) and I'm using a Windows box at the moment, so I can't check that right now.

j_mclain
07-09-2001, 03:24 PM
Agreed. If Google can't find it for me, I check other sites. They're almost comical, though, in that none of their results come close to the accuracy of Google. The few times Google's drawn a complete blank and ended up in left field, the other sites are truly pathetic.

Viva Google!

While one individual site may be better than
another, there is nothing like a search engine that uses all of the best engines, and returns to you the best results from all of them. The program that does this is called Copernic, and may be obtained from www.copernic.com. (http://www.copernic.com.) You can get a free version with advertising, or pay for a version which has no advertising, or pay a little extra, and get extra functionality. You can choose.
It is one hell of a good search engine, and
uses google, as just one of the sites that it searches. Try it, if you haven't, you will be
pleasantly surprised!
