Admittedly, the G4 cube wasn't all that powerful @ 450MHz, and it was considered to be a computer for the sake of decoration by others. But the important thing was that Apple showed they could fit an entire computer into a tiny, tiny space, and still have it work like its 450MHz G4 minitower counterparts. If the cube were cheaper (lose the expensive flat panel monitors and extra stuff), it would have been a better commercial success.

I'm not sure the public was ready for the idea of a totally aesthetic cpu. first time I saw it I thought it was a tissue box

the fact that they had no fans irely passive cooling) is a feature that even the most die-hard PC user can appreciate, at times, silence can be deafening.

Well I thought that the Cube was a great looking little machine and 450Mhz is fine for me, and most people I think. I have a 450PIII 256Mb and an 800PIII 256Mb (almost the smae components) at work and to be honest most of the time I don't notice too much of a difference between the two.

I generally do network admin, db design, web graphics, web site design and DTP for publishing, so I consider myself a power user, I have been involved in computers for over 10 years, have MCSE etc..

Now I don't want to get into a big debate over this.. BUT.. as a business owner I want a reliable and functional system.. Windows has been fine, but the cost of administering it is ridculous, it is insecure (though I do have our network sitting behind linux firewalls) and sometimes a real pain to use.. I was considering moving to Linux.. especially as it can do everything my works need to do in their day to day jobs (for free MS!) unfortunatly linux can't do everyhting for me.. but MacOS X can.. it loos good - runs unix! (probably debatable that, but anyway) it runs all the development software I need.

In short, I think that in my case, interoprability is what I am looking for, I want an easy to use desktop.. free from all the toys and garbage that everyone seems to love downloading.. designed for production environments (yeah we actually build stuff -crazy isn't it?) (apple has been here since day 0)

I was even considering buying one now that OS X is here, I dont think people need 1GHz processors, I have always found that the quality of the subsytems in the computer sis of more importance than an extra 50Mhz her or there.. and most people just dont need that sort of power..

Roll on apple...
