Is Netscape bowing out of the browser race?

That is too bad. The quality smoothness and dare I say sheer luxuriousness of the Netscape browsers would be sorely missed. Atleast by me.
I just think that they should find a way to incorporate their bookmarks into the start menu favorites folder so that many people might find them more convenient, and keep producing the quality products.

I think this is a good thing. Ever since i have had netscape and ie, netscape had always had problems. If i had too choose a browser it would be ie. I feel that it is more stable and reliable then netcape will ever be. And dont say it is just my comp, it aint.

From a developer's standpoint, Netscape has always been a pain in the ****. Netscape 6 was definetely a step in the right direction, but I still shudder whenever someone wants an application to be Netscape 4.08 compliant.

Unfortunately it was inevitable ,AOL is IE based what would they ever want with Netscape.

well. I think when AOL took over netscape, they screwed it worse then it already was. at least 4.5 was workable. it seems all the newer versions crash to often. Now I'm not in luv with I.E. 100% but at least I can get through an online session without it falling apart like netscape usally does. Yea, even on the 233mmx or my P-II 266 or the P-II 350, netscape comes tumbleing down way to often for my liking. maybe this will give mozilla the incentive to get their **** in gear.. madfish

This really isn't the big deal that is being made of it. They aren't saying Mozilla is dead (downloaded .9.1 lately? it's come a long way), but rather that the focus of NS is switching from the browser to web applications and content. Which, if anyone here had been following Mozilla, is the whole point of it. That's one reason Mozilla is so slow... the developers built an entire architecture layer between the OS and what you see/use in Mozilla for creating web applications in XUL.

Mozilla certainly isn't going away. Rumor has it that AOL 7.0 will actually be based completely on Mozilla.

I used to be a big fan of NS until the little "quality feedback agent" startup popping up and crashing my systems (4.08) I tolerated it for while until it crashed my system at a less-than-ideal time-- I sent an e-mail to the NS folks and explained that I would no longer be using NS until they could rectify it's problems. From that point on I have been a die-hard IE fan. Everyone has their personal favorite and IE has been working for me-- is it crash free? Nope (I mean come on now, it IS Microsoft) but it has been less crashy than NS.

Its a shame that netscape is bowing out of the browser business, but there is one company that surpasses Microsoft and Netscape's internet browser. Goto www.opera.com. (http://www.opera.com.) It's the quickest and smallest web browser around and it always gets the job done. OPERA!!!!

while its true that netscape browser windows are alot more attractive, i never liked netscape... there is just something about netscape that didnt appeal to me. so i honestly dont mind them leaving

I was a big Netscape fan, & it's still my browser of choice, but it seems to have become less stable with time. I suspect it may be web technology moving ahead of them, as more & more sites are IE-only friendly. I was massively disappointed with NS6 - a real crock IMO & way too memory hungry. I uninstalled it after a few days (manually - as there was no uninstall capability...).

I'll still have to give my vote for Opera. Even though many sites are still "IE crippled", Opera's numerous and <u>useful</u> features beat IE hands down. I especially love 5.11's "mouse gestures" feature. w00t!

The K-meleon browser (http://kmeleon.org/) is based on gecko/mozilla and is very fast. It's in beta but when the final ver comes out it'll be nice and stable, no doubt.

As a professional web developer I'm glad to see them go. Netscape layers sux a big one. If I had a nickle for every hour I've spent trying to get something that works flawlessly in IE and refuses to work in Netscape, I'd be a millionaire. They started back on the right track with Netscape 6, but unfortunately the program as a whole is a piece of junk. The worst thing that could've happened to Netscape was being bought by AOL; talk about the cancer of the Internet revolution. Anyway, don't get me wrong, M$ is not got a perfect product either, but short of Opera or the like, their the best thing going. -- Jester3653
