The P4 was laughable compared to the athlon. Take away its precious rambus and u got a expensive underpowered system.

Spidey is right, out of all the Sandra benchmarks I've run on my 1.2ghz Tbird overclocked or not, still out preforms the P4 1.5 and 1.7ghz in both CPU and Mutlimedia testing, the only thing that beats me is the memory benchmark where the P4 is always off the scale to mine. Goes to show the Athlon is the better processor.

Not exactly a great move on Intel's part, though several Tawain companies are to debut i845 boards at Computex. The Pentium IV's hardware prefetch routine is specifically designed to match the latencies of RAMBUS, not SD-RAM. Also, SD-RAM will not be capable of sustaining the peak memory bandwidth to allow smooth instruction due to a serious processor to memory bus mismatch. While this does not really mattter for those typing a document with Word, this could present a significant problem for those interested in multimedia or other memory intensive applications.

Funny thing this is all Rambus's fault.

The i845 can be used with DDR, they just cant put the DDR DIMMs on the board til Intel gives the goahead...and they cant til the liscencing agreement runs out with Rambus on Jan 1 2001.

I dont even know if DDR & P4 is such a good idea. Via's getting first stab at that one with the P4X266.

Looks like Intel made a deal with the devil. All they can do is sit and stare..and make pleas to Via not to release their chipset.

Intel made a CPU which defies all logic. AMD have had their position thrust upon them. Intel aer waiting for the P4 optimized software to come into effect. AMD have nothing to put up against this software when it does.

The RAM will make it cheaper, but no more sensible. DDR is the more affordable option, and works more logically.

Untill the new stuff comes out, I'm stickin with AMD. Then I'll check it out. It's useless picking sides untill the battle commences.

Why anyone would pay so much more for an Intel processor is beyond me. AMD makes a better(faster)product for less money. I have used AMD processors for years and never had one to fail.

If I was not concerned about value for money (price/performance) at this point in time, I would probably opt for a Pentium 4 system with that expensive RDRAM. http://www.sysopt.com/news/gws/cdata/smile.gif

I reckon if you are going to consider a P4 with DDR RAM then you'd be better off getting a system with an AMD processor.

The thing that really turned me on was something the "computer guys" at work told me. They said a P4 with RDRAM has a huge system bus speed of 400MHz or more.

Any comments?
