Ok, Internet explorer has been locking up on me constantly lately, leading me to try all manner of fixes, including removing my overclocks, updating and switching drivers, and all the general **** you do (including a reinstall of Windows).
So, I finally get desperate and remove DMA access from my hard drive--and IE seems to be working perfectly! WHY is this?

Hah! Cancel this. It took it longer this time but it crashed just the same. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif Still, I might be on the right track--I'm going to reinstall the older UDMA drivers I was using instead of these newer ones...

Well I'm using Win 98 SE and up until the last few days have never had a problem with it. I WAS using the ALI 3.56 IDE drivers--I'm back on 3.51, which I also used for a long time with no problem.
UPDATE:
Still crashing! It gives me an Invalid Page Fault, then dumps me out to Windows.

have you tried useing the autorepair in IE ?
if not go in to add remove programs and remove IE there will be a pop up that will ask if you want to repair the current install tell it yes and let it run

Ok! Here's the full story. First off all, the system:
MSI 5169 Rev. 4.0 (AlI Alladin V)
112 Meg RAM (currently @ 96)
K6-2+ 500
Voodoo3 2000
____________________________________________
I bought all the components for this system about a month ago, mostly new, and added the K6-2+ processor about two weeks ago. The chip installed and was recognized flawlessly by the BIOS, and the machine ran great until early this week.
Internet Explorer began to crash repeatedly when I attempted to write an email using Hotmail. The actual error is as follows:
Explore.exe has encountered an error in module <unknown>. An invalid page fault has occured at address 000000:000017. (I KNOW the address is right).
At that point I decided to just reinstall Windows. I copied the data I needed into my D:\ and got to work. Since then, here's what I've tried:
1) QuickFormat hard drive, reinstall Windows (no repartition).
2) Reinstall all drivers with newest versions.
3) Internet Explorer still unstable, remove processor overclock.
4) Removed video card overclock.
5) Removed older piece of RAM, thought to be a potential problem.
6) Replaced video drivers with standard 3dfx drivers rather than Beta's.
7) Installed older IDE BUS drivers tested and found functional only two weeks ago.
8) Ran Fdisk /mbr to clean master boot record.
9) Scanned with Norton for viruses.
10) Re-flashed AMIBIOS
11) Adjusted BIOS settings to fail-safe, optimal, and custom.
12) Updated drivers for 3Com TC509b Etherlink card.
13) Ran I.E. 5.5 auto-repair
14) DOwnloaded all Windows updates.
___________________________________________
This list isn't quite in order, but its all the steps I've taken. The only other thing I can think of to do is to repartition and reformat the hard drive--which I really don't want to do. Can anyone help?
PS--NO system components were ever clocked to a dangerously high level or ran a high temperature.

I tried IE 5.5, very unstable. I uninstalled it and all is fine. Get rid of 5.5 it locked up my system 3 times in 2 days.

I concur with canit. I had a series of bizarre behaviors with 5.5 and uninstalled it. Going back to the previous version of ie resolved my blue screen problems.

Alright, I'll try it....but as I recall I started getting crashes as soon as I re-installed Windows 98 SE, which comes with 4.0
