Sandra says my HD (IBM Deskstar 40GB 7200 RPM ATA/100) has a 7ms seek time. Buffered it can right 71mb's a second, and read 76mb's. Random it's something like 33Mb's second.

That's the only HD benchmark there is right?
Does HDTach still exists???

Abit KT7A-RAID
1GHz T-Bird
IBM DTLA 75GXP 45GB 2MB cache ATA100 on o/b ATA100 RAID as Primary Master Single

P.S. Have to restart the comp to make HDTach to work after install, will do it tommorow since I'm compressing DiVX right now, already for 6 hours http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Sandra's not the greatest software for measuring a drive's real world performance.

My 2x40gig IBM GXP60's, RAID striped, only got 73Mb/sec and 55Mb/sec on buffered read/write and 35Mb/sec on Random Read. But then this is a P3-560Mhz on a 3 year old motherboard.... can't expect too much http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I've downloaded HDTach, yet to try it out though...

All I see is this:

Maybe only angelfire subscribers can see them as I have seen the above logo in many posts. I wonder what other people see.

So is Sisoft more better in benchmarking or this HD-Tach?

So HDTach still exist??? Cool!
I'll run some benches!

And ND, I can't see the pics either! So, it's not only you otheos!

Sandra is a "synthetic benchmark" so it "supposedly" gives an idea of the drives performance in "operation circumstances"

It is highly inaccurate. Don't use it.

HDTach is not a real benchmark. It is the equivalent to what WCPUID is for CPUs. It will show you what your drive is capable of in terms of STR, access and burst speed. So don't expect a drive that appears faster (like the maxtor above) on HDTach to be actually faster in actual use, as I can assure you the Quantum above is faster in all but sequential read/writes.

This is a typical mistake by people who use RAID0 and admire the high numbers.

What I mean is that the fact that HDTach says the drive, at position 4GB can read at 25MB/s, does not mean that this is what you get when you use the drive! You only get this if you do a sequential read (like HDTach does) from beginning to end of the drive. A random read will be in the 6-10MB/s.

So unlike WCPUID where the results dictate the performance of the CPU and you know a 1.3GHz Athlon is faster than a 1.2GHz Athlon (stick to apples with apples here, so no P4s, sorry), HDTach results don't say much about the performance of two comparable drives, as hard drive performance is very very complex and is dictaded by many factors.

Still, HDTach is the tool to use to see if everything works as it should.

Look here (http://forums.digitalmntsnow.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=147) for more on that.

Thanks.
