I don't have them yet but people have told me the altec lansing acs295s were pretty good. they ended up being 79 with shipping. i think they are two 7watt and a 20watt subwoofer and the guy i ordered from said he has them and they are good, after i had already ordered them too.

should know more by tuesday night if you can wait that long.

Always wondered about this one... Why does everybody buy a separate pair of speakers for the PC??? I run my AWE 32's "line out" into my Aiwa home stereo system and it sounds a helluva lot better than any PC speakers I've heard.

I live in an apartment and don't have room for a stereo in my room, plus the newer PC Speakers are actually Digital instead of Analog sound, through the USB port and stuff and they sound alot better, with unbelievable effects in the near future!

donn, did you get your 295s yet? What do you think of them?

I ended up ordering Altec Lansing ACS45.1's for just over $60 they sound great at normal volumes, they don't get too loud though, are the 295's or whatever any better?

The "Dixie Chicks"? I suppose they're probably better than the Dixie Cups.

Well, i got them and they sound okay so far but i haven't played any games with them and only listened to a "dixie chicks" cd with them because we only had my sister's music with us. My only complaint was that one of the grills had ink on it from the moisture packet. I just emailed altec and they said they don't stock spare parts so i won't be a happy camper if i have to send my whole set back just to change the grill.

Hi

I bought recently the Labtec speakers APX-4620 (http://www.labtec.com/products/APX-4620.html).
The sound is just great.
Before, I was using the Altec Lansing (ACS45). These speakers are good but Labtec is really better.
Also, the quality of the sound depends more on the sound card than on the speakers. I would then recommend the sbLive...

same here Dawgtuff. I think the Labtec speakers are great value for the money. I run them off an AWE64 and they sound good enough for me.

hey why dont you just get some RCA cables and hook up a car stereo system to your computer like i did! i have 2 3.5in sattelite speakers, 2 tweeters mounted on my monitor, 2 surround sound speakers mounted on the wall behind me, and 2 8in subwoofers under my desk! it makes stuff fall off the walls upstairs when i turn it up loud!

If like me you are limited (by girlfriend and neighbours) in the amount of noise you can make, invest in a good pair of enclosed headphones.

Personally I recommend Technics or Sennheiser. I used to have a pair of cheap Walkman-type open ones which were okay, but the quality and bass on my new Technics 'phones is superb!

And you can turn it up as much as you like, no-one can hear!! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

If you can save up your $$ get the Cambridge SoundWorks FPS2000 w/ a Sound Blaster Live card w/ digital out. Great for DVD, games and you won't need a home sound sys.

I know you indicated $50 as a price range and other than the recommendation of routing through your home sound system, the only choice is Altec Lansing. I just spent a little over $100 for the ACS56 4.1 system. All I can say is WOW! Great sound, great sub volume and handy controls. All in all, best buy out there.

Maybe look into the Labtec LCS-2414 speakers? It runs around $50 and has two satellites and a sub.

If you want some better sound though I bought myself the LCS-2514 speakers (I got mine for $65 after tax, but they were 25% off) which are basically the 2414's but with two extra satellites for a 5-piece system. Sounds excellent to me- and if I turn them up and go downstairs and feel carefully the sub will shake the walls.

They give 31W total power which is plenty for me. I don't know what you mean by "LOUD" but for a tight budget I think these things are great.

Wow jit, I am thoroughly impressed by your brilliance. I will be sure to look to you for handy advice in the future.

As for speakers. I have been impressed by Altec. I had a set of $50 Altecs (acs 45 I think, 2 sats and a sub) I loved em. The sub had adjustable volume, and the sats were small but powerful. I grudgingly gave them to my sister when I upgraded to Altec's ACS56. That is a great set as well. I love the way the bass and treble are adjusted using the same knob as the volume. Soooooo, for $50 I would look to Altec. I like em.

I got some Altec speakers w/sub (forgot what model) with my Dell computer for a $30 upgrade from the average h/k speakers. They are probably worth $50.

They are VERY good sounding speakers. The sub kicks some bootay for being so small.

BTW, I don't use them. I gave them to my dad and sister. I use my own BIG stereo http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif.

Jit, what would you recommend then? We are waiting for your knowledgable answer...

I'm very happy for you Gomer, but maybe you need your ears cleaned. Just kidding!!! The Altec's are nice, but alittle boomy and boxey in the bass, not as flat as I would like. But maybe I'm spoiled. And as for you Warthog if you would look at what was posted on 8/22 5:00pm you would know what I would recommend which is the Cambridge SoundWorks FPS2000 4 Speaker sys w/ digital inputs. I got'em for $120 bucks.

Sorry, I did not see your post http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif.

Although, you can still get decent speakers for $50 - unless you are super picky.

EARS CLEANED!!!! ARGGGH! I just happen to be a licensed audio speaker evaluation technician http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif My special area of expertise is $50 dollar speakers. hehe.

I will agree with you that they are boomy--but he wanted loud. To some people boomy=loud. Altecs have also suffered a little with midrange performance. RaeRae is looking for something inexpensive and of all the inexpensive speakers I think Altec does a pretty good job.

If you want a set of speakers that are low cost and still fairly good quality, take a look at the cambridge soundworks speakers. I own two pairs of them (one for front, one for rear off an sblive). They are only $39 for the retail box version.

I bought mine from www.mwave.com (http://www.mwave.com)

Two sattelite speakers and a 6.5" subwoofer per set.

For the cost I find them hard to beat.

Altec sound ok, but Labtec is better in sound quality. Labtec was what I bought way before even Altec came out into the market like a year. A friend said Altec was awesome but it turn out not true as that the only thing he had heard. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif I'm glad that I had bought Labtec before I did with Altec and notice a big differences between the 2, and I come to conclusion that I will no longer be buying any Altec in the future. Altec sound OK, but Labtec is much more pleasant to listen to. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I never regret buying any Labtec and will continue to buy more in the future. They sound great and their 2 piece speaker are far superior then any other I've seen. The difference between labtec and altec is sharper sound and crispy clear.

Here's what I did with my Altec 3 piece system. I took the boombox apart and attached a wire to it. Rewired to my car, and use it as a bass speaker. Pretty cool thing I did huh? Got tired of it after a month. HEHE put in the center of my car and sound is decent enought. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif The best thing I ever done without spending a fortune for real car speaker.
