Over the past few weeks I`ve been having a problem. 75% of the time I go to shut down, it hangs. Most of the time I go start, shut down, it removes everything but my backgroung and just sits there. I hit ctrl, alt, del and it says that the system is busy waiting on the shut down dialog box to appear. Well, it`s already appeared and I`ve already clicked shut down. it also says to hit ctrl, alt, del to restart....well, thats a joke too, that dont do anything. Last night it went as far as the screen that says windows is shutting down, and hung again. I`ve disabled the fast shut down and that did`nt help. I`ve checked for errors, defragged, everything I can think of other than re-installing windows. When this happens, I can kill the power and restart, then it will shut down like it suppose to...Any suggestions before I lose everything I have here? Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.1998

I can't tell from the version # if that's W98SE or not. There's an Microsh*t update for the shutdown "bug" for W98SE. Installed that? If yours is not SE, then use Msconfig to stop ALL start-up progs 'cept explorer.exe and Systray. Stop all timed screensavers. Disabled "timed" power management junk. Then see if it'll shut down properly. Post back.

have you tried the 98 shut down patch from microsoft? Sometimes it helps, if not when you get to the black screen turn off your computer, thats what I had to do with my 450 as turn off fast shutdown did squat. PS- ME doesn't have that problem.

so far, so good. I disabled all the startup programs except systray and my antivirus and for the past 2 days it`s not done it since. MS is starting to act like PMS. I just dont understand why this would all of a sudden start happening. Like when I open my browser now, it opens in a small window. I keep dragging it to fill the screen, close it, sometimes it`s small, sometimes it`s big. wierd things are happening.

IE5X likes to load some kinda prog @ startup for some reason (personalized settings?) -- I can't remember it's name 'cause I destroyed it instantly after installing IE5.01. Maybe that has something to do w/it. However, my IE always opens the same size, so I dunno. You might think it started all of a sudden, but are you sure you didn't install something, even a Microsh*t update? Sometimes just browsing will load stuff on your box w/o you knowing it unless your security settings prevent it.

I can tell you this. When I disabled all those startup programs, when I re-booted, it asked me for every password I have. even email in outlook.
