I've installed the writer and the system recognizes it as master on sec IDE. So far so good. But, I need to load cd-rom drivers to install writer driver cd and it slips my mind. Are the basic cd-rom drivers on my system cd, and do how do I install these guys.

What OS are you running? Your CD-ROM should've been automatically recognized. Did you check to see if the jumper is on SLAVE for for the CD-ROM and the CD-Writer is on Master on the Seconday IDE Channel?

As further clarification, I have a p166mmx,64mg, and have existing cd-rom drive. I made the old cd-rom slave/sec/IDE, but I need to load basic cd-rom drivers for the new writer so it can "read". I just forgot how to do that.

If you are running Win98 it should be in there. I've copied all the CAB files over to my hdd, which makes it easier.

Usually the installation calls for drivers from the installation disk or the os. If you have a cd for the cd-rw installation use that. If not, use the OS drivers or look for drivers at the manufacturer's website.

I'm running win95 and the writer is on master/sec/IDE and the cd-rom is slave/sec/IDE. Do I install the software on the old cd-rom, or install standard cd-rom driver for the new writer so it can have read ability?

Not sure if Win95 will have the right drivers for reading from the new cd-rw. Usually those are generic, like Oak cd-rom drivers usually work.

Did you settle on the Plextor?

Try the cd that came with the cd-rw for installation for the drivers you need for reading from the cd-rw. If not there, check the manufacturer's website for drivers.

OK, WIN98 takes care of any drivers for a CDROM. Just plug it in. Boot up and go into My Computer. It should be listed just as a plain CDROM. This is good. I think what you are refering to as drivers is the burners software(ie:Easy CD Creator). Now you simply install the software. No need to worry bout CDROM drivers.

For some reason when I place the cd in the writer tray, it doesn't know hwat to do. Should I be using the older cd-rom to load the new drivers and should I get those Oak drivers off my system disk.

What it's telling me is it can't "read" from the writer to load the Plextor software, so I'm supposed to load the generic Oak drivers on somehow. Am I to use the new writer to load or the old cd-rom. Sorry if I'm npw being very clear.

Appreciate all the help. I should know better than to try to install a device on a PC with the FLU. Anyway, the problem was I had the wrong setup disk. Dumb! Yeah, I know! All good advice and instructions and I'm sorry for not presenting the right set of circumstances so you could evaluate my problem better. This is a great site and you've been very helpful. Thanks.

One more thing, when BIOS picked the other drive(writer), it changed the drive letters:Plextor writer(F), cd-rom(G). Does this mean I have to reload drivers to both drives? As you can see, I'm definately out in left field.
