I was gonna install win2k advanced server on one of my machines just to learn it. I want to set up a server for my lan, and I want to host a website where I control the server. Now neither of these things are going to be done on a large scale (5 comps on the network), but I was just wondering what some of you thought of win2k advanced server.

would it be more worth my time to install apache or something like that?

Personally, I run a Linux web server. I've never touched a Windows webserver, but I know you wouldn't need to install Apache for it. I'm pretty sure Win2k Adv server would come with Internet Information Server software(IIS).

I think the best place to try and get feedback and opinions would be a web hosting forum (http://www.webhostingtalk.com) . I visit there most days(I'm Inspa.net) and have met some very wise and intelligent guys on it.

Hope this helps!

Truthfully then just Win2K pro or standard Server will do just fine. Advanced Server is MUCH more expensive...The only reason I have it is due to me being an OEM and a member of MSDN (MicroSoft Developer Network) and basically got it for free (after of course a healthy fee to be a member!) It is basically the same thing from a IIS standpoint other than the amount of concurrent users that are able to connect to the resources..With the #s your talk about then I would highly suggest 2kpro or 2kserver and forget about 2kAS.

As for how to setup IIS the tutorial is very straight forward but of course you can visit here or such places like http://www.iisanswers.com/

thx both...

mnt, I already have it, so that is not an issue. I was going to install it just to learn how to use it, but if it's really that bad, then I'm not sure that it's worth it anymore.

ignore the scalebility portion of it for now please. I just want to know waht you think of it.
