My CD runs all the time whenever a disk is inserted, even if it is not being used. Any way to stop this?

Is it the case that your floppy drive is on continuously, whether a floppy diskette is inserted or not? If this is so, read on.

The floppy diskette LED remaining on continuously may indicate that the data cable is on backward at either the drive or controller connection. Reinstall the cable properly and retest. If there is no key on the floppy data cable, use the coloured wire in the cable as a guide to the position of pin number one. This cable is orientated correctly when you plug it in so the coloured wire is plugged into the disk drive connector towards the cut-out notch in the drive edge connector. Older drives used to require various jumpers to be set to allow the drive to work correctly. The two most common jumpers were the Drive Select (DS) jumper and the Disk Change (DC) jumper. If your floppy drive is an older version and there are jumpers, there are a few simple rules to follow. The DS jumper will normally have two positions, labelled zero and one or in some cases one and two. In all PC installations, the DS jumper should be set on the second position, no matter what it is numbered. This will allow the drive on the cable before the twist to function as drive B: and the drive at the end of the cable after the twist to function as drive A. The DC jumper setting is normally an on or off setting. For PC usage, if the drive has a DC jumper, it must be set on or enabled.

If on inspection, the cable is correctly installed, it may be that the data cable could be offset on the connector by one or more pins. Reinstall the cable properly and retest. If this does not rectify the problem then your cable may be defective. Replace the cable and retest.

I hope this helps. Let me know if it works ok.

All the best,
G

No...the floppy drive is ok. Whenever a CD is placed in the CD Drive, it runs continously until the CD is removed, even if the CD is not being used.

If you use a windows os, disable the auto insert notification, maybe that'll work.

Hi csthews,

My mistake. I will blame that on my dyslexia if that is ok with you. There is a program that I have been able to find for you. I have not tried it myself as I have only just downloaded it and I will be away for a few days so I will not have the opportunity to test it or determine if it is the solution for you absolutely. I will send it to you as an email attachment. If for whatever reason you do not receive it, post back and I can try an alternative method.

To late. Email address deleted

Let me know if it works in time.

All the best,
G

What do you mean by "runs all the time"? You mean the disc doesn't spin-down after some time? What's the brand of your CD-ROM drive?

If this is any help, I've run my system with the cover off on my CD-ROM and I've noticed that once a CD is inserted, it spins continuously even if it is not being accessed. This seems to be normal operation.

I've noticed this too.! Some CDROM drives usually spin down after reading the inserted cd after 10 to 15 seconds. But some cheap drives (like mine) doesn't spin down!! It just lowers it's speed but it is still running!
