Actually, the insanity is on my part.
I've been trying to load Linux on an old 486 I have lying around. I'm having probs with the CDROM, that are being resolved. Anyway, failing again with Linux this weekend, I figured what the heck, let's slap the Win98 and see where it fails. About two hours later, I was looking at 'Welcome to Winders'.
You may share my astonishment iffin you check out the hardware below;
486/66 (putt-putt)
800Mb HD
24 Meg RAM (twenty four!)
No NIC (maybe I'm thinking of loading NT)
The HD space adequate, but I was under the impression that there existed minimal requirements for proc and RAM. Neither seems to apply in my case.
Though back in the day, I had a box running 95 that had a P75, 630Mb HD and 8Megs!!!! (performance went through the roof when I tossed in another 8 megs ($60 at the time).
Just thought you may find this interesting.

I did the same thing to a friend of mines 486DX2 with 66MHz, 20 meg's O'RAM, 1 Gig SCSI/HD, a searing 14.4 modem, Windows95 to 98. I ended up with a "Some Drives Are Using Compatibility Mode Paging" problem.
I can't seem to cure it yet.
I took over the Swap file with 150 Min & Max. Worked on the [vcache], Mapped cache, Turned window animation and menu animations, Changed the Max Cached Icons registry entry for file system thrashing, did the so called VMM32 bug fix, Instant refresh rate of "zero" won't work (couldn't select multiple files with the shift key), Menu Delay hack worked well, Removed Outlook Express Splash Screen, Worked with msconfig and the startup prog's, Shut down the Min/Max/Close tool tips, Set the PCI Steering to only the Microsoft table,
I set up the ports in the win.ini to get that modem running faster plus all the connection tweaks and registry hacks there is known to man for the modem, Took the check out of Search for floppy disk drives, WaitToKillServiceTimeout reduced to decimal value of 16, Turned off tool tips, Changed the User Shell Folder to C: instead of My Doc's (saved a little bit of clicking), Put Tweak UI in, Hacked the registry for programs no longer installed and removed all themes and sound event schemes from registry that weren't in use, Did RegClean, Compacted the registry, Installed I.E.5.01 and all upgrades available, Word 97, ICQ 99b, IrfanView, Works 4.5a, Control Panel Appelett in the Start Menu. 16 bit colour is all I can achieve with the present Vid card. Removed sound activation. I still have 665 Meg's of HD to play with. Not bad for an "OWO" computer.
Disreguard that last comment if you don't get it. It's in reference to another thread.
Cheers! and am I ever glad I have a pentium sitting here as well.

Beemers, a possible fix for your compatibility mode problems with the HD is to search the registry for the term "NOIDE" (or is it "NO IDE") and then delete that key. That'll usually do it.

Just guessing, OWO = OtherWise Obsolete ?

Old Wise Ones there "Outy".

I can call you "Outy" can't I?
"NOIDE" and "BADIDE" are the first things I checked for when I discovered it. I'm just getting into the hardware aspects of computing lately. I have avoided it for a long time and it is now time to learn. I think it is a hardware issue or hardware incompatibility issue. It's hard to tell as I can't seem to pull up any information on the bios string or find the proper info listed on the mobo itself. I don't want to take up this thread but if you are interested in dealing with this you can find the thread at: http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/Forum2/HTML/008827.html
Any help would be appreciated here.
Cheers!
