well I'm posting this just 2 let every1 know my experience with the Kenwood true x 72x... I bought 1..paid 130 bucks 4 it...The install was ok no problems, when I installed all my programs it worked great noproblems at all..it is very quiet and runs very smooth...but the problems begin when I try 2 use it 2 play games(the main reason I bought it)...it freezes up at the launch of the games...so no biggy I took it back got a new 1...same thing happens with the new 1`,so I contact kenwood support at their e-mail address...3 weeks go by then I get a e-mail saying they received my e-mail and they will get back 2 me within 5 days......well 2 months later and countless e-mails i still have not received tech help from Kenwood..and btw I have not been rude or annoying 2 the tech help they just do not respond .....I mean I bought this cd ROM drive because I wanted the best, the price is way over anything else on the market and with the Kenwood name I expected it 2 be a good product..I can understand bugs in new technologies but what I cant understand is a very large company like Kenwood that basically says go 2 hell after you buy their product..I mean I guess they got my money so who cares now ,right? has any one else had this same problem with Kenwood? btw just 2 let you know this is a Kenwood, problem not some conflict or a software problem. I reinstalled my cheap 40 dollar 48x Memorex and it works fine.........This is Kenwood tech support e-mail support@kenwoodtech.com try it out just 4 the heck of it see how long it takes them 2 reply..if they even do support@kenwoodtech.com

You say you think the Kenwood is at fault with the games; may I ask why?

Have you checked out other possibilities why only games won't run?

I got pretty good support from Kenwood last year on a 52x, same technology. However, it died just about the time the first year was up and I just got a different brand with conventional (not true-x) guts.
Gotta love those 1-year warrantees!
I called them rather than waiting for email tho.

I also have the 72X true X, And have no such problems.. I play games amongst other things and It works perfectly, I only had one similar problem, but was resolved through their support page It would say please insert disc into drive when I tried to play a game, although cd was in the drive, I just downloaded the new firmware and viola, It worked like a charm.... Also the manual says to ensure better performance, enable the dma feature...

Try upgrading the firmware, see if that helps

I have a Kenwood 72x. Never had a problem with it...I have another kenwood 42x in my other computer, not that many problems..

Oh, and I do play games with the CD-Rom (72x). Some of these just for ref. :
HalfLife, Sims, Delta Force, HomeWorld, etc. I run programs with no problems too. Maybe you were unlucky twice. Contact Kenwood about a RMA number so that you can send it in. I know that they have been pretty good with sending new drives back really quickly. This is assuming that the return date has passed from the store that you bought it from. Dunno...all in all...very good drive. Outruns the 52x and 42x in all aspects. Good luck...keep us posted

although i don't doubt the success stories here, i had my own failures w/kenwood. originally i purchased a 42x cd rom. it wouldn't read numerous CDs, some burned, and some from pc magazines. i sent an email to support. they replied that i needed a new drive. referred me to their RMA dept which i emailed, received a response, sent in the drive, and got a new one a week later. although that problem was solved i had other problems.... mostly with audio CDs locking up the system. not burned either. it would play a cd, it would stop, then i would play it again and it'd lock up. i have since received a 3rd drive and still had problems on my old mobo... i have a new mobo now but haven't done enough testing to see if the mobo was related.

in both instances i did the firmware upgrade and have DMA checked. fortunately i did my own tech support, because their tech support didn't do any for me. they instantly told me i needed new equipment without even attempting to troubleshoot the problem (perhaps because i already had). my experienced differed though in that they were prompt in response.

i have spoken with numerous people about this problem. almost all have stated kenwood products are good equipment when they work, but notoriously flakey. it is also a general concensus that kenwood's time of producing quality equipment (overall, including stereo) is over and it's a good idea to stay away.

The cd-rom is used only for the movies on games and unless you have a scci drive that can handle a buffered transfer rate of 80mb's/sec then a 24 to 32x cd-rom is all you will ever need.

well like I said when I put my Memorex 48x back in it works fine...and i can get the Kenwood 2 work...but I have 2 push the eject button at the start of every game doing this unfreezes the cd ROM but as you can guess it gets very old very fast......and besides that lets say its not a Kenwood problem why can they not reply 2 my e-mail..I mean how am I supposed 2 find out if it is or not if they wont even give me a reply..its just very bad business and I will have a very hard time buying another Kenwood product because of this......here is that tech e- mail agin i didnt do the other 1 right support@kenwoodtech.com think i did it right this time..as i said before send them a e-mail and see if they reply

well im glad 2 hear that others have had the same freeze up or lock up...this way i know its more than likely not anything wrong with my computer its self...but it would sure be nice 2 get a response from Kenwood....the game i play the most is rogue spear and urban ops..both in the rainbow 6 line...they only require the cd 4 the launch of the game...if your hosting or playing single player...as long as your not hosting you dont need the cd...but like i said b4 it works great in all other aspects..just this 1 area it seems 2 have a flaw...i just wish they would at lest return my e-mails

Like I said before, I upgraded the firmware and all problems were fixed, I was having trouble with Diablo 2 starting. It would state that the CD isn't in the Drive, Upgraded and that was that

I've been using a Kenwood 52x (True-X) drive ever since it originally came out. I've never had a single prob with it. It reads anything I can stick into it. Although recently, the drawer got off of its alignment and I had to put some effort into getting that fixed. Other than that, this Kenwood has worked great.
