I have a 30gb hd with Win2k. I ran Partition Magic 5.01 and created 4gigs of unallocated space between my C: system partition, and my second partion (I have 4 partitions already total).

I want to use this unallocated space to create a partition (for dual booting) but PM won't let me, the option to "create" is 'greyed' out. When I'm in Win2k disk manager, it won't let me partition/format it either. What's wrong?

Thanks,
jj

This is a limitation of the master boot record. The master boot record has the capacity to define up to four partition table entries, one of which can be an extended partition. Also take not that "Some Boot Managers", and other diagnostic partition types also take "slots" or entries within the master boot record. That is why your having the trouble you are having http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

Snow, IOW you're saying PM is limited to making 4 partitions, correct? That's what I always heard (never tried to make more than 4).

I think you can use SYSTEM COMMANDER to make more than 4 partitions. As I recall using the older version about 4 years ago, they allowed you to install over 100 OS on a single disk. (not that 100 OS's exist, but....) You might want to look into that. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I scanned this from my manual that came with this program "System Commander", this is an older version, there is a new version out.

Thanks each of you for your information. I had 6 partitions on this drive(well, actually I didn't - this is an ibm that I imaged from a maxtor hd that had 6 partitions on it, but when I 'Ghost-ed' it, it didn't copy the last two partitions.

The original hd was set up with Maxtor's 'maxblaster' disk. There were 3 partitions, plus the extended partition that was divided into 3 more...I don't understand that but three sub-partitions (?) resided 'under' the extended partition in the Partition Magic window, and each had a drive letter.

I doubt I'd be able to use this disk on an ibm hd, and I'll look into the "blooming miracle". http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
