I was doing some prep work to see where I was going to install my cd-writer and I noticed my existing cd-rom jumpers are set to "csel" which I think is cable select. If I install the writer as "master" will the other cd-rom adopt the slave position automatically?
The existing cd-rom also has the audio cable connected to the sound board. What do I do to get the new writer connected to the sound board?
And as I was establishing a Mindspring connection to the net, I got a windows fatal exception pointing to VXD IFSMGR(1), which I've never gotten before. Does anybody happen to know what might have prompted this error?? I have been trying to optimize my connection a bit, setting the max speed up, etc.
Appreciate all the help you can give me. Thanks.

Q1) If you set the CDRW to master, the CD should be jumpered to slave or there's no telling what will happen. Better safe than sorry.
Q2) If your sound card has another plug for "line in" or something you may be able to put an audio cable from the CDRW to it. I'm not sure why you would want your audio cable to go from both, though. Better to use your regular CD player to play music.
Q3) I don't recognize that error. Whenever I get something like that I go to www.microsoft.com (http://www.microsoft.com) and search the knowledge base for the error. Usually there's something there that will give a clue as to the problem's source.
Hope this helps http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Regarding item #2, if I connect the power, IDE cable, and have the jumpers set right, I don't need the audio cable attached to have the writer do it's job? Somehow I thought you could play cd's on both cd-rom and writer if connected properly. Guess I'm not sure if I'm doing this right.

In regards to the fatel error, it could be linked to something called the kak virus. THere was some posts a while back that posted a link on how to clear it, see if you can find that, if not i have it on a text file i could send you. A friend of mine had those errors everytime she was on the internet and she also had the kak virus on her computer. See if removing the kak virus helps, and also search microsoft.com. If not, reformat the hard drive, and start fresh.

I use my dvd-rom as master. Better to let the cheaper drive do the everyday non-writing jobs, saves wear on the more expensive CD-RW.

I would put in the CDRW alone, get it happy, clear the VXD problem - conflict or virus, either way it's gotta go http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif
When all is fat and happy, put your other CD Player in as slave-in-line or secondary master if you have room.
Good Luck...

You guy's are a wealth of knowledge. Don't know how much of it may apply here, but thanks.
Back to installing the writer. If I do decide to keep cd-rom and writer, does it matter which ide fibbon cable connection is connected to who, since there are two connections on each cable?

Also, is there a best power cable hookup scenario, meaning, would it be best to use power from the HDD connection or cd-rom, since the only available power connections are doubled on the power cables currently in use?

Hiya Jim!
Most of the early posts about cd-rw's I saw here stressed putting the cd-rom on the primary slave and the cd-rw on the secondary master.
From more recent posts, this doesn't seem to matter now, but is good to know if you run into any problems configuring it differently.
Good luck!

Regarding your 08-29-2000 04:29 PM post:
You need the audio cable attached to the sound card only if you're playing audio CDs in the drive. The sound card is not involved in writing CDs. You will only be able to play audio CDs in both drives if you have more than one place to connect audio cables to the sound card. In a system I worked on the other day, there was a jack for the CD cable, and another marked "line in" which could also be used for connection to another CD, DVD, or CDRW drive. If your system doesn't have another jack, you probably can't do both.
Regarding your 08-30-2000 04:50 AM post:
It shouldn't matter which cable connector goes to which drive as long as the drives on each cable are jumpered correctly If they are both on the same cable, its been recommended that the CDRW be set to master, and CD set to slave.
Regarding your 08-30-2000 04:55 AM post:
I've never really heard too much on which power connections should be used except that you should try to match up heavily used devices (such as primary hard drive) and less used devices (such as floppy drive) on the same cable.
I hope this helps. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Appreciate all the responses, folks. I'll let you know what happens after I figure out if I have a KAK virus or not. Getting screwy error exceptions pointing one time at the printer, next at an internet connection (VXD(1)error), and sporadic windows errors. My OEM suggested Fdisk, format and reload 95. I guess that will get rid of that pesky little bug, but wish there was an easy solution. Just went thru all that **** last weekend. Thanks, guys.
