I have added a second WD HD replacing a Maxtor one. The problem is when accesing in some way the hd, the system freezes rapidly several times, until it finishes reading or writing the hd. DMA is on in all units.
1 M: ASUS CD S500/A
1 S: WD HD 30G ATA66
2 M: Plextor CD-R PX-W1210A
2 S: WD HD 30G ATA100
Im booting with the second HD. When booting with the first, everything is ok.
ANyone having an idea?
Thanks in advance.

Actually, I have never seen or heard of a master hard drive being run as a slave. When I say 'master' I mean the main hard drive should be set to master on the controller. I also think the cd drives should not be run on the same channel as the master hard drive. How about reconfiguring your setup and let the WD on channel 1 be the master, and place both of your cd rom drives on the secondary channel.
You say you are booting with the second hard drive...do you mean the slave ata100 on channel 2?...if so, are both hard drives bootable with an OS installed?...

I think your hard drives a wanting to be masters on the channel. I have never run HDD as slaves on the boot drive.

Me thinks Phillip is right. I thought the boot drive always was master.

It actually makes no difference if the booting HD is master/slave, but placing optical on one bus and HDs on the other may help. I am sure the 12/10/32 is PIO4 and this definitely brings your hard drive (that should be ATA100) to PIO4 mode.
The ASUS is UDMA33 so (if all works) it should not affect your ATA66 HD's performance.
What chipset?
Go h ere (http://forums.digitalmntsnow.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=147&FORUM_ID=17&CAT_ID=5&Topic_Title=Hard+drives.....+Are+they+working+as+t hey+should%3F&Forum_Title=Data+Storage+Devices) and do a test of your hard drives to see if they work as they should.
Now that I'm reading over, if your WD on the secondary works at PIO4 mode it's very slow!

If your mobo is UDMA/33 only, and the WD is 66 capable, it came shipped in 66 mode and you must use WD software to switch it to 33.
Check out WD's site for downloads.

Thanks all of you.
I tell you I have Win ME on the first disk and Win 98 on the second. Win ME works fine.
I tried disconnecting the CD units too.
And just a few days ago i had the HD being Master in the primary and secondary channels.
And was the same thing.
Thanks again.
