when I install my network card and set up my workgroup, my boot times get way too long. Is there a way to get past this? I use tcp/ip for dial up and netbeui for peer to peer on win98...any scripts I can modify? why does it do this?
thx

There are 2 SAM files within Windows called HOSTS and LMHOSTS. You can edit these 2 with all the machine names and ip#s from you LAN and it will help boot time a little. Just edit the hosts file and it tells you how to specify the info with in the file.

thx for the info grunt...do you or anyone else know of a good website that may elaborate on this aspect of networking? such as assigning local ip numbers and the effect on dial-ups and tcp/ip?

If you assign an IP address under network properties , instead of leaving win98 to allocate one on-the-fly, your boot times should return to normal.
Hope this helps

it did, and thx...I gave my whole network local ip adresses and dont have to use Netbeui anymore either...this keeps the dial up from going off all the time in tcp/ip when I am networked...
