How big of a difference is there between those two HD's

ata100 7200rpm harddrives are a lot faster

ps. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif As long as your motherboard supports the faster drives (IE: it has ata66 or ata100 supported ports)

The 7200rpm drives will typically have a faster "seek" time as well

There is a fairly large differnce between the ata33 and ata66/100. The difference between the ata66 and 100 is negligible. Yes, the 7200 is faster but I wouldn't call it a lot. In most cases you wouldn't be able to see any difference.

There simply is no comparison. ATA100
7200rpm drives rival the SCSI drives for
access times and transfer rates...Check
the specs and see for yourself. http://www.maxtor.com
However...if your MB does not support ATA/100
operation...it will operate at 33/66 what
ever you have. Also...be sure you have the
correct cable. the proper cable for ata66/100
is a 40pin cable, with 80wires. they put an
extra between each for interference. It will
not operate properly without it. It also will
not operate properly if you have a slower
drive or CD-Rom on the same cable...

How big of a difference is there between a Porsche 911 Carrera 4 and a VW Polo?

Same kind of question...

There is no difference between those two cars so the hard drives are the same.

Recently, I posted (almost) the same topic as yours. I would like to share you their comments on your inquiry.

I hope this helps.

Then, you'll drive the VW Polo and I'll have the Carrera... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Fine with me. Just as long as I dont have to pay for the cars.

Who said we had to pay?
We just want a test drive so we can compare them! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Remember, you drive the Polo...

7200rpm is the main reason this drive is faster. The ATA66/100 does little in adding speed. Benchmarks have been published that show a 5% increase in speed. The 7200rpm drive is much faster.

There is also a question of data density.
The more data per sq inch, the more data the head will read.

Well, back to the original question

-----> I am talking about ATA33 here, is there a big difference between 5400rpm and 7200rpm harddisks ??

I am gathering parts to upgrade my computer.. so far I've got the Duron800 cuz it was on sale last time, now it's the harddisk's turn.. I think i'll get one of those ATA100 7200rpm harddisks, but if I stick this hd in my old computer which is a P2-BX chipset, will I see a any difference at all?

STAN,

The difference is, one will get you some self-loving, the other will get you laid.

HAWKEYE - put away the KY Jelly and get laid.

The 7200 is noticeably snappier in use. The primary reasons for this are the reduced latencey, and the larger buffers in the UDMA66/100 drives.
I have also found that the Via Intel boards that support U/66 don't seem to perform as well as they should. Putting a Promise U/66 card in seems to perk things up a bit in disk intensive app's.

If you want to run win2k, i would suggest to use a 7200 rmp hardisk. Due to it's lower accesstime, win2k will run smooth.

Just for comparison: my brothers 600 duron boots win2k on a ata66(not sure about that but he does have a ata66 controller) 30 gig 5400rpm in over 5 min. My good old PII266 boots win2k on a ata100 (but on a ATA33 controller!) 30 gig 7200 rmp (ibm deskstar 75gxp rulez) in just 40sec. He even has more memory that i do. I will not begin to speak over the time it takes to open a program, but it was horrible.

my advice.. don't go for a 5300.

MrFreeze

ps: sequential transfer-rate of the 2 harddisks are about the same: 25-30mb/s, it's all thanks to the lower access time...
