CDR or Hard Drive?

I am trying to decide what to spring for:

A new hard drive to replace the burned out one in my old system (PII 300).

A CD-RW drive for my new PC.

A new HDD would alow me to network my systems back together for multiplayer madness. A new CDRW drive would alow me to make CDRWs, copy files, and other such (look, you should know, okay?).

Which should I buy. O, and is a 8/4/32 CDRW any good?

What brands and how much? Or have you even begun looking?

Without knowing any facts. I would go with the HD. CDR's are nice, but having the other PC up and running would probably be better.

Get both, cdrw's are so cheap (cheapest here are $100) and hds cost virtually nothing. For $200 you would have both cdrw and hd =)
Nothing extremely special but working ones.

If all you have is a PC with a burned out HD, then I assume the PC doesn't work. Thus, buying a CD Writer for a PC that doesn't won't get you anywhere.

I don't need much of an HDD. My old one was 4.2 GB. What's the cheapest I can get?

I will spend up to $135. NO more. Saving for something else.

Yep, good ol Pricewatch. They only list HDDs from 20 GB and up though....

I agree with muno - get both. I pondered this question last year and finally went for the CD-RW, but a couple of months later, as hard drive prices were low, decided to get a second hard drive. They have both come in very handy.

a) I don't need a second hard drive. I need a replacement for a second computer's hard drive.

b) I said I will spend up to $135. A CDRW and a HDD both will cost more than $135. I would get both, howevr, if anyone can find a hard drive of 4.3GB+ capacity for less than $65 (WITH shipping and 6% tax).

Both Best Buy and CompUSA have had hard drives available for $40-$50 (after rebate) in the past couple months - too bad you missed those.

If you have a Best Buy near you, they have a WD 30G HD for $99 this week, plus you get a $25 gift card. Buy the HD, and save the gift card until the next time they have a good sale on CDRW's. You might get close to your $135 target.

If you want cheap stuff you gotta either shop Pricewatch, or watch the sales and rebate specials in the stores.

I really haven't found any smaller(<20gig) hard drives for sale. Once in a while you'll see a 10gig, but the 20 is usually $5 more, so it's no big savings.
Ebay is an option, but a little risky, since you never know...
And be careful with a lot of the merchants on pricewatch. Go to resellerratings.com first, and there are a couple of topics here on good places to buy.

Also, I've done well with hard drives at www.gogocity.com (http://www.gogocity.com) They have some 10gigs for around 60.(when I've ordered from them, they come fast and packed really good)

Oh, I would definitely say get the HD over the CD-RW. But, here's what I suggest, spend the $135 and get a 20-40 gig 7200 rpm hard drive, put it in your main computer, and put it's old hard drive in your second system. Then they both probably get an upgrade!

rebates,Best Buy has a LG 8/4/32 CD-RW for
$70 or $80 after rebate.These drives are consistently rated high from the standpoint of price vs. performance,and I have had good
experiences with two of these units.
Have also seen Staples and other chains offer 15 or 20GB 5400RPM Maxtors for $50 or
$60 after rebate.
Keep an eye out.There are bargains to be had
out there.I think my credit cards are actually melting!

Well depends ... If you can't get both (Which you've expressed you can't.) I'd personally go with the CDRW, because then you can burn those MP3 songs, and other stuff ..

Maybe in several months, move onto the hard drive.

I have one of those Lite-on 12x10x32 "Burn-Proof" cdrw's. Bought it 2 1/2 weeks ago, it was a pain to get cd creator to work with it. But finally did. And its not as burn-proof has it says. First cd to cd copy I tried, caused my first coaster. Supposedly the cdrom (52x) couldn't read info fast enough. Isn't the point of burn proof to shut off the laser till the buffer fills back up? The buffer was full at 100%.
CD clone caused a coaster. I have NTI CDmaker running on another system, with a 24x scsi cdrom and an IDE yamaha 2x2x26 cdrw. Didn't get a coaster from that.
