I recently took my computer to the shop to have a new hard drive installed. How do I know they installed the Maxtor hard drive that I bought? I notice my computer is working slower than it used before. Is there any way that I can check if my original parts were not changed without opening the tower?

If the hard drive's model number is shown during the boot sequence (when drives are detected) or in your device manager, do a search for it on the maxtor site or just on the internet.

Also check in the device manager under Disks to see if DMA is enabled. Enable it cause all the newer maxtor hd's support it.

under disk drives There's only the following:
GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE46
GENERIC NEC FLOPPY DISK

Does it mean they didn't install the maxtor?

That just means that whatever drive it is, it's just being displayed as a generic drive in your device manager.

There may be a utility that would tell you what drive you have but if there is, I don't know of one.

Did you check for it during startup (when drives are detected) or maybe in your BIOS?

How come you can't just have a look inside your PC to check your hard drive's manufacturer and model number? If it was me, I'd switch the machine off, take the lid off and try and read the information from the lable on top of the hard drive.
