I installed a new external firewire HDD the other day, and upon restart Windows 98 will sometimes "lose" the drive. It doesn't appear in Control Panel, and the desktop shortcut is invalid. It may take several restarts before Windows "finds" the drive again, and everything works great till I have to reboot again. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to the problem- it may happen, it may not. I even tried different OS's, but it did the same thing in Win ME and Win 2000.
My system configuration is:
AMD Athlon 750 on SOYO K7VIA mobo (VIA chipset)
Win 98 SE
256Mb PC100 SDRAM
D-Link DFW-500 IEEE 1394 interface card
IBM 60GB external drive in firewire case
Quantum 40GB ATA100 internal HDD
Diamond Viper 2 video, Diamond home phoneline network, SB PCI-512 sound, Cirrus Logic ext. 56k modem, TEAC IDE CD-RW & CD ROM drive, and various other doodads (printers, scanners, etc) that are probably irrelevent...
Anyone have any ideas what may be causing this problem? Thanks http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
