I just built a new P4 1.4 PC (specs below), and the DVD-ROM and CDRW aren't being recognized in W98. The BIOS detects them just fine (they're on the secondary IDE), but there's no sign of them in either Windows Explorer nor the Hardware Profiles tab. The SoftBIOS doesn't appear to let me specify the drive letter, but it detects and identifies the devices.
P4 1.4
ASUS i850 mobo
128M RDRAM
ATX case, 300W psup.
AIW Pro 32M vid-card
DVD-ROM (master)
Philips CDRW (slave)
Hardware profile tab ?! you wont seea anythign there. look under device manager
How can assign drive letter in bios setup ?
If your bios detects the drives on post they should show up in device manager.
How are they configured? make sure you leave them on auto in bios
try resetting bios defaults and see windows detects your drives

Sorry - I meant to say Device Manager, not hardware profiles. I'll make sure they are set to 'auto' in the bios and try again.

Problem resolved: in transplanting my HDD from the old system the IDE controllers hadn't fully reinstalled. Running the 'Add New Hardware' applet from control panel and forcing it to scour the entire system did the trick.
