Thanx for the link. Couldn't get some of the links on the page to work, but i got the bios upgrade.
Just checked my hd, used scandisk and noticed it somtimes takes two or three attepts to check the file allocation table. Is this a problem??

Why should i check my fan??? What should i look for and what should i do if i find anything????
The fans only about 4 months old, the heat sink is about 1 and 1/3 inches thick from base to top.
Thanx - Rob

Just a thought on something I read;
Sometimes, weird, unexplained crashes that are hard to pin-point are the result of a faulty power supply. Your system looks good, but with a flux in power, the mobo can be going a little off with the proper amount of voltage thats needed for the various components. Try checking the P.Supply with a Multimeter.
Think So? Just trying to give some ideas. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

You need to check the CPU fan & heat sink because overheating is one of the most common causes for the symptoms you describe.
Make sure the heat sink is attached firmly & correctly and make sure the fan is working. Any air gap between the chip and the heat sink will prevent the heat from being carried away. A little thermal compound helps, but too much is worse than none.

Some CD Roms won't handle having the DMA box checked in device manager. In my case, my Sony 32x started throwing bad files leading me to a hosed system. I checked the DMA box since it worked wonders with my HDD performance scores when I checked DMA on HDD!!
Definately a bad idea for me and my Sony CD!
Good luck..!

My Pc has lately started crashing a lot. Windoze98 gives a lot of the blue screens. Explorer crashes, office 2000, etc. Even when i install everthing from a clean hard disk. I have tried zero fill tools to really get the hd clean and nothing seems to work.
I have an:
AMD k6/2 450MHz CPU
64mb SDRAM PC100 Seimens
V3 3000 AGP
2HD's Standard IDE, Fujitsu 2.6G and a Seagate 1.1G
44x UDMA33 CD-ROM
Zoltrix Phantom 56k pci modem
Sound Blaster compatible ALS100
Jetway J-542b Mobo
I use:
Win98
Office 2000 (If it decides to install)
IE 5
Official V3, sound and modem drivers
Other apps, tools etc.
I have thought about upgrading the bios and my mate said my 2.6g hd might be on the way out. But there is no obviouse problem with it, so he doesn't know.
Could the bios be setup wrong?? Becasue my system has a nack at crashing anything, so whatch out in your cars for my pc coming at ya.
If anyone has any advice how to fix these problem or how to set up the bios correctly, please let me know.
Thanx - Rob

Check your BIOS to see if you have an outdated version at http://www.j-mark.com/Product/mb/j542b.html

Next time you buy a PC get it from Shagariffic PC Emporium. Why you ask? Well, because those EvilPc PC's are eeeeeevil.

Well, it sounds like your CPU gets way to hot - and that normally happens when the fans not working (It is the fan that cools the CPU, that i'm talking about)
Once, i booted up, used my computer for almost 5 hours. then i started getting bluescreens galore - and suddenly it wouldn't even pass BIOS. Then i noticed that a noise was missing. - My giant cpu cooler wasn't spinning. - i'm danish, and i don't know what the thing that the fan is a attached to is called - heatsink? - anyways, it had been able to keep it ... well not cool - but below the dangerzone for 5 hours (big mother******) - så check i f the fans spinning - also check if your heatsink is cluttered with dust: it hinders the heat from disspitating
-Hope this helps

Thanx for the advice, but i have alredy stated my Fan\heatsink is only about 4 months old and it works fine.
Anyway i checked it just to make sure, it spins and everything!!!
The heatsink is at about body temp so i don't think its that.

Nomadd may be right about the power supply. Another possiblity could be bad RAM. You may want to download a copy of DOCMEM and see if it finds anything.
