Want to build a gaming server to be used intially on a LAN of 7-12 users. Would like feedback on what is felt as most important - RAM, CPU, or HD performance (or in what order)?
I am considering the following:

ASUS CUSL2 815e MB
512 MB cas2 PC133 RAM
700 Mhz PIII (maybe OC but would prefer not to)
Seagate X15 SCSI 18GB (15K)OR 18XL (10K)
Adaptec 29160N SCSC Controller
Win 98 SE (for gaming compatability)

I would like to avoid OCing, and would like to go with the 815e chipset. Problem with this is the 512 MB RAM limitation. Would like to maybe go with 768 MB and find an 815e board that supports it. Any suggestions?
Hard drive performance will likely not be an issue, but I though SCSI would be the way to go for expansion.

for only 7-12 users, that server is definitely overkill. SCSI and that much RAM are unnecessary. The CPU could be slowed down a little as well (get a Duron for value).

Check out the server that Lord Demios is working on. That's just a dual Celeron 400-500 w/ 128MB RAM and an IDE HD. It'll be made to handle 15-25 concurrent users. http://24.20.100.130/test/test.cgi

For 7-12 people, with dedicated UT I would recomend...

PII 233
64mb ram
4gb+ hd
Win98

It doesn't take much power at all.... unless you want to be able to run it as a client simultaniously, or you are running multiple game servers at once...

i would think about a daul cpu mb you can get alot horsepower that way.that way you would have the base for a internet server if you ever wanted.

massive overkill...you could run an internet server for like 20 people with that system. 128 megs of ram is about the minimum i would ever do on a game server. no need for scsi. a decent ide driver will wrok just fine. we run celeron 400 game servers with 128 megs of ram for LAN parties here all the time and never have any problems...they even work well on 64 megs of ram too...these are half life and half life mod servers as well as quake2 servers.
