she want the biggest monitor i i can get my hands on for 500$ so i guess it will have to be a 19"

If she is going to be writing a book then surely she will need at least a keyboard http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif .
looks good to me tho'

If she is going to be doing any pixelating get her the Logitech Cordless Wheel Mouse. Nice smooth action nd not to battery hungry. Great for a womans grip as well.

I would get a pretty cheap sound card & speakers. I don't think that this old lady will be playing Q3 very much.

true

there might be no need for the sb live
a old 16bit card would do her fine

i had the cordless mouse once
it lagged so much that i threw it in the garbage http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

I would recomend that you get a DUAL Processor, since she will be making books with this computer that you are building for her. If budget is your problem, get a couple of Pentium III 450Mhz which sell at dirt cheap prices nowadays. Trust me, a DUAL PIII 450 will out perform a Single Duron or Pentium 3 at 600Mhz or 700Mhz, maybe even 800Mhz.

The reason I recommend DUAL is that she will be using page layout programs to make her books, such as Quark Express. Inserting 3-D images on a document file can put a real heavy load on a computer, and also make you feel like you are computing in MOLASSES.

Here is the spec that I recommend:

Tyan S1832DL Dual M/B (Very stable & Affordable)

Dual P3 450Mhz

384MB RAM (This should be very suitable for serving her purposes, 128 will not cut it)

WinFast GEForce256 DDR 32MB (this will do fine since she isn't going to be playing Q3 or something. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif )

Western Digital 7200RPM hard drive
etc,

The spec that I have provided above shouldn't cost much more than the spec you have above.

I think you'll have to run NT or 2K for dual processors.

On the 19' Monitor how does $250-300 for several choices on 19"? http://www.us.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=70001434&loc=673
<<- that one is a Hansol $250.00 w/free s/h, after $30 techbargains link.

Many more http://www.us.buy.com/retail/category.asp?loc=380
s/h avg.s $30 ea.

Remember that buy.com's Clearance page's have free s/h.

That 19" for 2.5 C notes looks tempting

That is correct Richard, you CAN'T run Win98, for it doe NOT support (SMP Symetric Multi Processing). You will have to run Win2K or NT4 or Linux, etc to use multi processors.

well the 3-D pics are not for the books

dont think a dually would be needed
the price would be too high

2xP3 450 =200$
dual mobo =300$
------------------
duron 600 =74$
mobo =165$

Look around for a decent DUAL M/B that does NOT have SCSI on the board. It shouldn't be that expensive. Here is a link here for a TYAN S1832DL DUAL M/B:

http://www.psyber.com/~familyco/mainbrd.html $139.00
http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.asp?EDC=115983 $216.00
http://www.ite.cc/mboard.html $85.00

Dabs.com ship to Sweden, and their prices may be better than you can get locally. Unfortunately you will have to pay shipping and VAT at the UK rate.
http://www.dabs.com/aboutdabs/international.asp

As goes 19" monitors, check out the CTX VL950ST for around £270. I have read good reviews about it and am contemplating getting one myself when my finances settle down http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Does she really need a Geforce? She probably won't even use 1/3 of it's capabilities!
