hey guys ive been getting pretty crazy with computer stuff lately. i just got a surround sound system and 2 8 inch subwoofers hooked up to my computer and ive got 4 big power supply fans going inside my computer to keep it cool.

ok my question is, i wonder if you can take a cd-rom and hook it up to a car and use it as the cdplayer? i have a cdrom that has controls on the faceplate such as next track, etc... so i wonder if i could put it in my car (not that i need too cuase i already have a car audio system) but i jsut want to know if it would work...

It would be very difficult if not impossible since the hookups would be so different. It would be less expensive to get a car cd-player.

well,,,yes,, to answer your question, it is certainly technically feasible, but you would have to practically be an electrical engineer to work it out. Cd-rom's are generally not designed to be in use while hard attached to a vehicle in motion, meaning, it would probably skip quite a lot.

waste of time, and money, but hey man, if you have the time and the money to throw around, then go for it,,if you do try it,,let us know how it goes.

good luck

A cdrom would skip like crazy in a car and would probably quit workin after a time. I think that cars also have a big problem with ESD don't they?

Would it even be compatable with the cars 12-14 volt power supply? What is the power supply of a computer like anyway. Arn't the hard drive and cd-rom connections 5volt? I don't know.

Why stop at a CD player?

MaximumPC put an MP3 player into a car awhile back just because they could.

MP3 Player = PC

A PC's power supply gives the drives both 5 and 12 volts. The hardest part would be getting a stable 12 volt (and 5v, for that matter) supply. You'd probably need to use two of those cigarette lighter adaptors common for portable CD players just to power it, since the car's 12 volt line wouldn't be exactly 12 volts (the alternator does pump out around 14v...). I'd guess that it's possible, but it would probably skip all over the place and you're limited to the controls available on the front of the drive, usually only play and eject/stop. It would be something to play with but I wouldn't expect much. Good luck.

At a Car show I went to a couple of weeks ago, a Guy had a Full blown computer, just sitting in his trunk, not in a case. I think it was a new P III flip chip, since it was really flat, and had a really high-tech heatsink/fan on it.....

He had 128 megs of ram too http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I am guessing it was an MP3 Player, but who knows http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
