Can anyone tell me if the HP 8250i Rewiteable drive is comparable in quality, usability and ease to the Philips CD-WRW404 Rewriteable drive? They are posted at the sam price..about $200. Thank you.

I have heard a few horror stories about the philips and I heard a lot of good things for the HP. if you dont' mind, I'm gonna make a recommendation for Plextor - the unanimous best burner brand. buy.com has it for $185 and combine it with $30 off $150 coupon (for existing customers), you can get it for $135. I don't know if you can post coupons or links to coupons on this board...if yes, tell me and I'll post it...if no, email me at Nero874@bolt.com and I'll give you the link. the drive is an IDE 8x4x32 w/ a 4MB buffer.

I recently read an article in *The Register* about HP reworking their entire line of CD reading and burning equipment in the very near future.Seems reliable,so I would hold off on HP for a bit.
The Plex is a nice machine IMHO.

Yamaha makes some nice burners too ... I picked one up for a friend for $179 retail with all the trimmings: 4MB buffer, 8x4x32 speed, latest adaptec software, some adobe software, and a cd label applicator with its software. Not bad for instant gratification, huh?

Yeah, I would definetly say to go with a Plextor, they seem to be very stable.
I use a dual processor system, and
believe it or not, I have never had a BUFFER UNDERRUN even when I browse the net and fool around as I burn a CD. I have had problems doing that with Sony and Yamaha burners.
