sound question

A friend of mine has a "Compaq"(I told him not to!)
He just downloaded Yahoo Messenger and when he uses voice chat I can hear him but he can not hear me. Here is the kicker!! If I go to the win(98) volume control the wave level moves like sound is playing but no sound is heard!?! The sound works for everything else except when this is running.

Any one else ever hear of this? I can use this proggie fine and have connected to others fine. He can not hear any one of us at all. Is this a Compaq driver problem?? Or is the program incompatible with the Compaq "emulated computer"?

This seems silly, but are the speakers hooked up properly. Does he hear other noises being shown in Volume Control?

Try reloading all of the drivers and see if the problem is still there. Remember that Regular drivers won't work. You have to have the Compaq drivers.

The sound works for everything else except when this is running.As I said above.
Tried re-loading the drivers and checked for new ones but they are 50MEGS!!!!

Should I just put a "real" soundcard in it or am I asking for more trouble? Or should I tell him to use a different program?

He has a 28.8 connection so the newer drivers are out of the question.
