My printer (HP LaserJet 4 Plus) has just started with this problem. It seems to "print" fine horizontal lines across some of the pages. The lines aren't always in the same place (depends on the graphics printed) and they are very fine "hairline" lines. Perfectly straight.

Anyone have any ideas? Printer cable gone bad, parallel port gone bad, help, please!!

The first thing I would try is a different toner cartridge, that can cuase all kinds of copy quality problems. Other than that I think the HP4+ has a printer control board that may be suspect if that doesn't take care of it.

How many copies has it made?

If it's around 30-60K, it's due for a Maintenance kit. If below, I recommend cleaning it, especially the fuser, be careful to only use camera lens cleaning solution and dont touch ( the fuser) it with your hands or old gloves. If it gets any oils on it, it'll do things like that.

Thanks everyone for trying to help. It's great when there's so many solutions to try.

I did in fact try a new cartridge before I wrote for help, but I have indeed tracked down the problem. For all you printer geeks out there, don't forget the very obvious.

I had forgotten about an old Swith-Box I had planted years ago under my desk, waaaaaaaaaay at the back where it was forgotten. I disconnected it and hooked up the printer direct and Voila!! no more lines, no ,more problems.

So, thanks again everyone and I posted this so it might help others some day.

What a place!! Thanks for the help.
