I go to the orthodontist once every month. SysOpt 04-29-2001, 08:28 PM Not often enough! Anyone have their wisdom teeth taken out? Mine are all grown in, none are impacted, and I'm wondering how traumatic the procedure is with local anesthetic.. socalgal 04-29-2001, 08:36 PM I was at the dentist just last week. I go every 6 months, with a "whitening" session about every 6 months (all that coffee! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif ) Scott, it's not too rough. *mwahahahaaa* Really, I'm JK! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif doh! edited. [This message has been edited by socalgal (edited 05-02-2001).] big_block_buick 04-29-2001, 08:44 PM scott, with a local, i heard the pain isnt terrible but the feeling of the dentist ripping out a very large tooth with what seems like a pair of plyers...no way, i'm getting put under...i'm 31 and still have all mine.and i go to the dentist every 6 months OuTpaTienT 04-29-2001, 10:26 PM It's been a loooong time since I've been to a dentist...and I need to go. Now that I got a dental plan at work that will cover the cost I need to get my **** in. I have all my wisdom teeth. I think 2 are ok, but the other two may be impacted and might or might not have to come out. I have at least one cavity that's starting to get bothersome. [sigh] I need to make an appointment...tomorrow a.m. krusty the klown 04-29-2001, 11:58 PM SysOpt: Not often enough! Anyone have their wisdom teeth taken out? Mine are all grown in, none are impacted, and I'm wondering how traumatic the procedure is with local anesthetic.. On my side of the Pond, wisdom teeth are not removed by the dentist - they're done in hospital under general anaesthetic. If I had a choice, I'd rather be blissfully unaware! Do you have a choice?? Hmmm... how often do I go to the dentist... I think the last time was when I was 15 & I'm 26 now http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif No fillings yet (joins Mntsnow knocking on the wood desk http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif) Szech 04-30-2001, 12:12 AM I go to the dentist about every 6 months. On getting wisdom teeth removed... I got all four taken out at one time, thank you very much HMO. Anyway, he put me under because he had to cut my gums to get the top ones out. Did it hurt? Not right away. The anaesthetic was still in me after the procedure. He gave me pain killers, but they made me pretty woozy, and didn't kill the pain too well, so I just dealt with it. I do recommend you put ice on it though. I didn't, and my cheeks puffed way up. I looked like a chipmunk. Oh yeah, and go to a competant person, because to get my bottom left wisdom tooth out, he had to break it up first, and he left a fragment in there. I was going to undo the stitch and pull it out myself, but decided against it and went back. Sucks driving when you're like that. Scared yet? Don't be. One little shot, and you're out. Just put ice on it, buy 20 cans of soup and you won't have to worry about it again for the rest of your life http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif. brandon184 04-30-2001, 01:22 AM I think the last time was when I was 15 & I'm 26 now Sick! I guess I'm lucky. Recent x-rays revealed I won't even be GETTING wisdom teeth. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif I was so happy when I heard that. lol Thud 04-30-2001, 02:46 AM Sysopt: I had all four of mine taken out by a military oral surgeon, and it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be.. They gave me a dose a Valium/Demerol from a seringe about he size of a 12 guage shotgun shell, so I was actually in pretty good spirits! I was awake for the procedure, but so high I didn't care. Took an hour and a half, seemed like five minutes to me. I didn't have any pain afterwords, but the sockets ooze blood for a couple weeks, and that's pretty nasty. My advice is to follow your doctor's advice to avoid getting a dry socket--I've heard that's extremely painful!! Best of luck, and no worries! Oh yeah, as for the original question, kinda ironic-- this was the first post I read after coming in from my annual cleaning this morning! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Wiruz 04-30-2001, 03:34 AM The last time i was at the dentist.. hmmm... when i was 18 - now i'm 20. I HATE the dentist - they always need to hurt me some way or another - for real! "Does this hurt?! - YES! it hurts when you poke my gums with that pointy thing - HOW OFTEN DO I NEED YO TELL YOU! Well, my wisdom teeth has come out just perfectly, and i have the same "indestructible" teeth as my dad. ...But sometime soon i need to go to that horrible place again - prevention is better that cure. But why do i need to pay for pain? (i am a complete sissy when it comes to dentist) ~Wiruz, The Digital Sissy krusty the klown 04-30-2001, 03:39 AM You know you don't do to the dentist often enough when it's so long between visits that they have to create new dental records every time you go.... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif dental records are only kept for 5 years here! skuz 04-30-2001, 11:56 AM Strange, strange... My usual dentist retired 2 years ago. I had sometimes 1 cavity, exceptionally 2. His successor finds 5-6 cavities at a time. It's suspicious since I did not change my habits... Warthog 04-30-2001, 01:35 PM Dafre - surrrrrrrrrrreeeee http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Me not believe a word you say http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif Warthog Sanman 04-30-2001, 02:04 PM Unfortunately, dental problems were common in my family. As a result, I lost mine fairly early, just like my dad and granddad. I now have dentures, and I'm kinda glad that I no longer have to go to the dentist. My last tootheache was the breaking point. That was the one pain that I just couldn't handle.Could bring me to my knees every time. Gomer 04-30-2001, 02:10 PM Odd question???????? 6 months draboo 04-30-2001, 05:35 PM anyone remember the movie about a man eating plant named audry in a bookstore? was a broadway musical also,me thinks. aaaaaaaaaanyway.....steve martin was a dentist, dressed in leather and really liked to induce pain to his patients. kinda reminded me of getting a root canal about 10 yrs ago. now, although a bit late,i have the oppertunity to go every 6 mos. Imperion1 04-30-2001, 05:36 PM Had all four molars pulled at the same time, when I was in the military. Told them to gas me because there was no way a general anasthetic was gonna work. They stuck an IV in my arm when I was out. All this wasn't too bad, counted to almost 200 before I passed out. Came to just before they yanked my last molar. And was knocked out from the pain when they did. (ouch) Thud 04-30-2001, 06:40 PM draboo-- Little Shop of Horrors. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif BFlurie 04-30-2001, 07:53 PM Never had a cavity in my life -- then 2 root-canals on adjacent molars in 2 years! Too much sugar in the joe. dafremen 05-01-2001, 12:40 AM My last visit to the dentist was in TJ Mexico. $100 to remove my last wisdom tooth. Since then I haven't seen a dentist. My teeth are still holding on(except for one molar which literally dissolved in my mouth over the course of three weeks.) some day I hope to move on to dentures, I hear they've really come a long way with denture adhesives and that dropping em into a glass thing just looks too easy to pass up. 8) Daffy Jonty 05-01-2001, 12:40 AM Krusty, who's your dentist!! My dentist has my records going back to when I was ten!! Thirty seven years ago!! My file is an inch thick! Every six months by the way for me! It is a necessary evil, if you don't go then eventually you have to go because things have got much worse. krusty the klown 05-01-2001, 12:55 AM Krusty, who's your dentist!! Dunno m8.... haven't seen him in over 11 years http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif AFAIK, they keep your records if you bother to turn up regularly..... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif wyvrn 05-01-2001, 08:20 AM I have not been in 8 years. Do you think I should schedule an appt? samwichse 05-01-2001, 09:58 AM Every 6 months, which is way too much. Just a note: whitening toothpaste: it's just like lapping your teeth... every morning. Use it and you will eventually polish away all of your enamel. Fluoride actually causes your teeth to become slightly browned because it combines with the material in the outer surface to form a different chemical (which isn't as white) that is resistant to the acids produced by bacteria. So "complete" toothpastes are polishing away the browness and reapplying it every morning? Sheesh, I'll just go to the Dollar Store and pick some Ultrabrite... Ca5(PO4)3OH (Hydroxyapatite) + F- --> Ca5(PO4)3F (Fluorapatite) + OH- Just happened to be looking at my Gen Chem textbook when I saw this thread. club_med 05-01-2001, 10:56 AM About twice a year, i have to make an appointment soon to get my wisdom teeth(sp?) taken out, they're hurting and also pushing other teeth aside, very painful that one. cm. brandon184 05-01-2001, 04:44 PM Oh Warthog, You're such a baby. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Believe it or not, I ENJOY going to the dentist/orthodontist. (My orthodontist is also my regular dentist.) dafremen - My grandma has dentures. The "adhesive" (it's actually something that creates a vaccuum, I think..) is QUITE strong. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Good luck with that. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif Ed_S 05-01-2001, 05:02 PM I've been regular to the dentist since I was 19 or 20. Currently 42. Have gone every 4 months for years. This lets them catch anything WAY early, makes it much easier (& cheaper) to fix. My wife was the opposite. Dreaded going & would put it off until something was wrong. Of course, then it would be a painful procedure which made her dread going back... Finally convinced (read enforced) her to get there regularly. Think she's convinced at last that this way's better! Hellmund 05-02-2001, 05:42 AM Heh, maybe once every 9 months, I got rid of my braces 2 years ago and now I only go the orthosdontist every 9months as well. I've had 4 teeth taken out at once and the only thing that hurt was the cracked lips. The numbness for 4hours was annoying too as they just kept bleeding for ages and I couldn't feel anything so I couldn't tell when it finished bleeding. I seemed to be going to the bathroom mirror every 5 minutes for about 2 and a half hours till they stopped. justy 05-05-2001, 07:11 PM Only when I have a tooth ache! I hate the place. Even the smell of a dentists, makes me shudder. Luckily I have reasonable teeth, so therefore don't have to many problems, but if I had bad teeth or gums, HELL!!! All the best, Justy. SysOpt.com
