Flash isn't that hard to learn if you have the motivation to go through it. I picked it up in a couple months and am starting to learn its native language, actionscript. As for your buddy's site, let's just say thank the lord for open source cause it provides a great tool for learning... or "borrowing" in some cases:

But that's what it's there for.

Pretty cool website. Do you think I'm on the right track starting with html or should I concentrate on learning something else first?
HTML is a fundamental of all things web. You should be comfortable with it before doing anything regarding web development, including ASP, JSP, or Coldfusion - I can't stress that enough. Yes, you can get away with WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editors, but that's not going to get you past tables and forms... most of today's websites should be dynamic as opposed to static and stale.
However, if you are into designing only, with graphics and animation, you can get away with not knowing HTML, as long as you're fluent in other applications such as Flash/LiveMotion or Director.
My favorite...

Hmm... you linked to their old site... their new one is very interactively appealing.
I had signed up for Balthaser's free 30 day trial. It really is a great tool for those not accustomed to the Flash environment. It took me quite a while to get something even close to resembling what I had planned out with their tool though. It would have been faster if I just did it in Flash directly.
Great tool nonetheless... they have the innovation and skill to capture a great market.
