Since I finished a bunch of work on my computer, including a new HDD and formatting the old one, I downloaded Windows Media Player 7 and for some reason, now some old AVI's I have that used to play perfectly fine, the sound is blasting loud even when i set the sound as low as i can without muting it, and it is so loud i can hear it on the other side of my house, and it is all distorted and crackly and you can't really make out the sounds. I have tried using the help feature within the program but it gives tips like "Make sure speakers are properly plugged in" and no brainers like that. and it doesn't even really have a category under the troubleshooter for my problem specifially. Any tips or things I can do to make the movies play like normal?
I am not sure but it seems like it might have said something when I first got my computer up and running again about a codec problem or something but I am not sure if that helps any.
I would remove the sound card drivers, reboot, then reinstall them.
If no luck, then uninstall the MP7 and see if it comes back to normal. It's possible you got some corrupt files on the MP7 download, so you could try that again.
Also run SFC.EXE and check for corrupt/deleted/missing files in the advanced options.

I hate WMP7! I just made an additional option for my media files, now when I right click on an AVI file on of my options is "Use old Media Player". Works great. And it's easy to do.
Open your file explorer, goto VIEW/FOLDER OPTIONS/FILE TYPES
Scroll down to VIDEO CLIP and then press the button that says EDIT
In the box that's named ACTION, you should have OPEN & PLAY. Click on NEW to add a new action.
Name it whatever you want, I named mine "Open with old Media Player". Then under APPLICATION USED TO PERFORM ACTION you can hit BROWSE and locate your old Media Player. It should be in the same folder with the new WMP7, it's called mplayer2.exe
My line, which very well may be the same on your machine, looks like this:
"C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\mplayer2.exe" "%1"
Then just say OK to everything and now when you right-click on an AVI file you have a choice to "open with old media player". There are a few other extensions you'll have to do this same procedure to if you want. Like mpg, mpeg, asf, wmv, etc.
