As you may have guessed,

Dell-733mhz
64PC 133 RAM
10.5@7200 ATA66
32meg NVIDA tnt2 m64
19" Monitor
WinME

$1279.00 from Dell, figuring a bit for your time running down the parts then assembly. And they ALWAYS fire right up with no problems, yea sure.

Bottom line , GUESS, please, ballpark figure.

Substitute Athlon if you wish http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Dell makes good systems, but you gotta remember when buying a Dell you are also paying for the excellent service. Nothing wrong with that...if you intend on using it (or if it's going to be a mission critical system that NEEDS to be fixed asap if it breaks). But many people, probably most people here at SysOpt, are the type that wouldn't really use Dell's service, prefering to troubleshoot and fix it themselves.

Anyways, as a very conservative ballpark figure, that machine could be built for well under $1,000.

Don't forget, with Dell there will be NO overclocking or upgrading the processor or anything like that (at least not without their written permission) otherwise your warranty/service contract will be null & void.

And case/power supply etc.

Think the Dell mobo is an o/c 'able one?

OuTpaTienT, did you include shipping charges or any applicable tax? And how many different vendors were used? When you include the mobo, case, and PSU, the Dell system is very reasonably priced.

I don't care, though. I just want to build my own computers.

Not to toot Gateway's horn, but they offer more options i.e. processors, good deals and excellent tech support. There may also be a Gateway Country Store in your neighborhood.

DON'T do Gateway. I configured my computer at Gateway (eventually bought it from Dell) and it was $200-300 more. I didn't notice ANY additional options - except for maybe the Spanish keyboard.

You just have to shop around w/ Gateway, they offer deals on different stuff. And they offer a better selection than Dell. It just depends on what you want. Dell only pushes Intel. Gateway offers AMD too.

Dell systems are not overclockable at all. The MB's are locked. At least to the best of my knowledge. If you call the phone sales rep they will be more than happy to configure the system any way you want it. True about Intel only. Why use anything else? :-)

Better selection? You mean you can have an AMD processor? I really don't know the difference betweent the two...

As far as I know, Dells w/ Intel chips use Intel mobos, which means no OCing....

I tried turing my 400 to 450, but no luck.
