Any of you guys or "gals" out there have experience with both a 56k winmodem and non 56k modem. The reason I ask is I have a winmodem which I usually connect at 50000 bps and have thruput of 4.5 to 5.5 kbs downloads. Comp USA told me that a winmodemn is more of a drain on the cpu. Can anybody shed some light on the difference they noticed when they switched.

The difference beetween the2of them is that non-winmodem uses instructions (some strings,...) from it's onboard chip when winmodem has to emulate these instructions by the supervising of CPU.
It's recomended that you use at least
166MMX/32MB because when you're online things start to be a "bit" slower.

I doupt you would do any better with any other modem than the throughput you have now. If your machine is doing everything you want it to do now, as far as processing is concearned,I would say don't mess with it.

Hi There,

In my case I found that although the winmodem did connect at good speeds, I couldn't do what I do now with my USR, which is download, listen to a music cd, and run some other apllication at the same time. (multitask)

Take care Liam
