I have Windows ME on an ABIT BE6-II Mobo with a Viking 56k ISA Win Modem. IT was working up untill today when after 3 hours it kicks me off the interent and then it can't dial up becasue it says theres no dial tone. I check the phone line, theres dial tone, i check two phone cables, and the modem works fine because windows can communicate to it and it will dial if i tell it not to wait for dial tone. Any Suggestions????

if you have voice mail on your phone you probably need to clear your messages.if not i would keep it to dont wait for dail tone.

Any lightning strikes in your area when this happened? Also, the female phone line connectors in the back of the modem can get damaged or act squirrely.

i don't know whats up with this i took out the internal modem hooked up an external modem and everything works, but it keeps saying theres no dial tone. I don't have voice mail, and no there were no lightning strikes. but there is dial tone once i connect a phone to it. its strange. any other suggestions?

Do you have your Modem "sound" turned up enough to hear? Some ISPs, like AOL, have their own proprietary "Dial-Up" program & the modem sound has to be enable there instead of thru Control Panel/ Modems

you may also be experiencing a low signal problem. the REN (ringer equivalency number) of every device attached to your phone line adds up and will cause a problem like this if you have a weak signal to begin with and then have too many devices (phones, faxes, etc) attached to the phone line because it will drop the line signal below the level where your modem will detect it. try disconnecting other devices from your line and see if that helps at all. just an idea.

Sometimes modems will have trouble detecting a dial tone. Set it for Blind-dial in the modem settings and see if that helps.

Thanks guys, but i think somehow the modem got fried, and plus the phone line has been screwed up by the phone company. MY internal modem can't detect dial tone on any line, even lines where my other computer dials in fine to the net. Plus i hooked up and old external modem and it gets dial tone on my line, so i think some howmy internal modem got fried with the dial tone. Now all i have to do is wait for the phone company to fix the line so i can dial the internet and i'm set. Whenever that will be. LOL. Thanks guys for all the suggestions.
