Im looking for an encoder that also allows simultaneous audio, seems the programs for this are pretty expensive, XING which seems to be the most popular is 300$, just looking for a working alternative thats alittle cheaper... http://b.postmypic.com/b.nsf/Z/MOD4PQWJ/$file/MOD4.jpg

I used Adobe premiere, which is even more expensive than XIng. It is an awesome product. I was able to manipulate the movie and do editing and I don't have an AV background.

For my purposes, I just wanted to replace the audio track and synchronise, which I did rather quickly and easily.

Sorry this isn't very helpful and someone will villify me because Premiere only does avi/mov, or something like that, thoughI am almost sure it was mpeg...

If you are trying to convert standard VHS tape to MPG, AVI, etc. format, and overlay sound into the MPEG file, Software MPEG will not do the job quickly, it will be VERY slow. you will need to get a Hardware MPEG Encoder card, which will cost you at least $1,000 USD for a decent performance card.

Adobe Premier does a superior job for Video Editing. One of the best that I have seen that is AFFORDABLE.

I've Been working quite a bit qith MPEG now, But I havn't found the ultimate program for it yet. I primarily use premiere for editing, and i've found the XING mpeg encoder plugin for it - requires the program Xing MPEG encoder 2.1 - i think.

Xing is very fast - but the quality sucks to say the least - the algorithm makes to many atifacts.

The best program i've found yet, was bundled with my Marvel G400 - LSX MPEG2 Transcoder.

It handles both mpeg 1/2 - and a ton of features - that is if you got the retail version. It has superior quality: No artifacts at all! - even at only 1150 Kb/s - where XING makes them even at 1954 Kb/s

If you're thinking big - you might wanna buy the Matrox RT2000 - it rocks!
