I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not you can get a MD for the computer. I've seen the MD data discs, but no drives. So, if anyone knows of a MD drive for computers, I would love to know about it.

Thanks,
Tim http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Its not the same thing. At one point, Sony did produce a MD (not MCDR) for the computers. It was a brief bit of time around the MD's introduction. I saw one on Ebay once about two years ago, but not since then. I wouldn't mind having one myself.

He could also be talking about these which have not really caught on here in the States (probably b/c of the record companies and their domination of pricing and technology)
http://www.sel.sony.com/SEL/rmeg/audio/cat3.html

These are like minicassetes and can be recorded onto by minidisk player-recorders only. They have nice playback but lose some audio quality compared to cd itself.

Thanks Tony,
Those little Cd's are cool and I'm planning on trying some. I was getting ready to order some and saw this: http://www.ioproducts.com/ioprod/avobuscarcdr.html

Now it's time for a stupid question. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
How in the heck would that work?
How would your burner know when to burn and when not to? Hmmmmm. Seems like that song would skip!

Dave,

I use THOSE too! As an e-business card with a brochure of my company's capabilities and a product catalog, etc. I've burned close to 200 of those little buggers! And I have about another 200 on-hand.

They work just fine!!!

As a matter of fact, a CD can be carved into any shape and recorded/played so long as the center of gravity is at the spindle!! Lots of companies have these really cool CD's for their products that are routed-out and shaped real weird, but they work!

Enjoy...

Thanks again Tony,
I'm ordering some of both right now.
I have heard about those business card CD's before but I thought they were some kind of specialty item. I never imagined that a standard CD-R could burn one.
Can't wait to give it a shot!

Tim,

Look down at your CDROM drive. You've already got one!

I routinely burn MCDRs all the time for my customers in my HP burner. And I routinely read MCDs in my 50x CD drive.

So, if you have a CDROM drive, and its got a smaller ridge of plastic in the shape of a MCD, you're good to go!!!

Have fun...

Tony,

Soopa and Dave know what I'm refering to. I'm looking for MD, not MCDR.

I've been using the audio MD's for five years . But, I've never seen the MD for computer. Recently, I've seen the MD data disc in connection with professional audio recording systems, but not with the computers.

So, I was wondering if the MD drives exist. If anyone finds one , let me know. I'm going to check Sony's site to see if by chance they still make one.

Thanks all,
Tim

Do minidiscs work on magneto optical technology as sony has MD listed on same page as MO disks http://www.sel.sony.com/SEL/rmeg/data/cat3.html
They do still make MO drivesbut not sure whether they accept MD's or not. MD's are however onlt 140MB so not really that much of an advantage over say a zip or LS-120 but still would be quite a cool gadget.
Time for some more hunting around

I did some digging on Sony's site and found info indicating they have, or are working on, a 650MB MD for video. Not sure if they'll make it for computers. Yeah, it would be a cool gadget. The capacity isn't necessarily what I'm looking for, as most of what I'd be putting on them is arranged such that it doesn't matter. I'm more interested in the portability and stability the format offers.

The only drives I found for computers were under their medical stuff and I wasn't able to pull up any detailed info.

I'm not giving up yet!

Actually, check http://www.buydig.com/cgi-local/shop/web_store.cgi?cart_id=244140.4493&page=outlet_frontpage_db.html&details=yes&exact_match=on&pro_id=SNVDCMM1&search_request_button=yes&accy= &as=

Looks like its available. i did a search on pricewatch.com for Minidisc and came up with two companies that sold this Sony Camera. 650 meg MD's. Can you imagine how many still shots and short mpg videos you could get on one of those??

Wouldn't work for me either as I tried to shorten it for page formatting. -socalgal

4500 @ 640x480, according to Sony.

The link is just the MD Camera. I already know about the camera. 20 minutes of video is just too short for me. $1500 is an expensive way to get a MD drive. The camera has a computer link too. But, this won't do for anything more than A/V stuff. I don't need another expensive camera. I just want to find a MD drive for my computer. Thanks for trying though.

I'm thinking I might just call Sony and ask them. Although, playing around on the internet is a much more fun use of the phone line.

I know others have asked about this before too, so if any of us finds the MD drive, let's be sure to post it. Okay?

Thanks again,
Tim

What are you looking to do with your drive? Purely data? or for audio/multimedia? If its for audio then checkout www.minidisco.com (http://www.minidisco.com)

Do none of you people visit the Brainstorming forum? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Read this thread and realize the truth within. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/Forum16/HTML/000151.html

MD drives missed their window of opportunity. Now, it's old, slow, small, and still relatively expensive technology. Let it pass and let >12x CD-R drives and DVD-RAM gen 2 drives come in their place.

Good riddance. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

is that like those drives in the computers you see in the matrix?

nilknarf

MD data = 140MB
MD recorder < US$250
MD disc < US$5

New MD for MDCam = 650MB

Okay, you can have the slow part because until they're used in computers, there's no need to run faster.

Joel, I do now. MD's didn't miss their window, they were just a little ahead of their time.

flash, yes.

nilknarf- I just purchased a Sharp MiniDisc to use with my beginning independent film/video making. I need to find a way to get the audio onto my pc.

rnmcd - your unit should have a fiber optic or digital out. Get a sound card that can utilize that interface. You may need a adapter ot special cable though.

I have this thread bookmarked. If I find anything I'll probably post it here.
