Well, on the new hdd, WD Caviar 13G, FAT32, Win98, when attempting to run Norton Speed Disk to defrag, it does the scan, then this message comes up:

"Drive C may not be configured correctly. Norton Speed Disk cannot be run on this drive."

I found a link that had Norton patches. One was called 'nolbachk.reg' and it turns LBA checking off in Speed Disk.

I hesitate to put anything (esp. Norton's) into my registry of which I am not sure. I would like to continue using Speed Disk as I prefer to order my files and set the swap.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks in advance for the help.

I don't use these utilities, so I wont be of uch help here.

If the fix is 'nolbachk.reg' and your concerned about the link that provides the patch, get the file from Symantec's site. http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/files/nu/norton_utilities_version_3x_for_windows_95.html

My apologies if I misunderstood your post.

Thanks Edge. That's the same file, but I'm still at a loss as to if this is what will make Speed Disk work without compromising my hdd somehow.

Guess I'll be using MS Defrag.

did you check in the device manager and performance tab to make sure the hd is recognized correctly with no problems?

Thanks for the suggestion, kwai. I realized last night that I don't have the UDMA/33 controller installed from the mobo disk. I am going to install that and then see what happens! I should get a little performance increase, at least!
