I'm afraid I cannot be of much help, but I can tell you that I had the same problem for a while. It might have sorted itself out or I might have done something, but either way it sure annoyed me... lol

This is not a problem so much as a cool feature that just appeared out of nowhere.
Have a look at this picture http://www.chariot.net.au/~bst/weirdIE5.jpg
and you will notice a few things.
First of all, The browser is Internet Explorer (version 5.00.2919.63071c).
Second you will notice that there is a black band that stretches across the entire width of the browser window and has the spinning globe in the centre.
Thirdly, notice that the browser has not yet been maximised and is in fact about one third the size of my screen.....
When I open a new browser window there will be a small (and expected) delay while the web site is found and displayed in the browser. During this time a blank white page will usually be displayed. All of a sudden one day, I noticed that the little spinning globe that normally resides in the top right hand corner of the browser now stretches all the way across the window and displays the spinning globe in the center.
This occurs only while the first page is being loaded in a new window and only if the window doesn't open in a maximised state.
I don't have a problem with this and in fact I really like the feature.
My query is this; How did this occur? I do a lot of mucking around with settings and must have inadvertently switched this feature on because I sure haven't noticed it before (I'm an MCP and I work on a lot of windows machines) Where is the feature that turns this on? I want to know because when I next format my drive I want to know how to get it back.
Has anyone else noticed this occurring on their machine?

Celeron 433 (541 stable for 6 months) 64Mb 15Gb GeForce 256 (detonator 2 driver - this new driver, by the way, seemed to make a huge difference to my machine - faster and snappier!) Win98 (standard edition) IE5 installed from a Magazine cover CD (PC World July 2000)

Thanks anyway but it doesn't (didn't) annoy me at all.
I liked it and want it back.
It was different and I'd never seen it before.
I sure would like to know how to get it back.
It's not that important really.
Here's a clue....I lost it when I was changing colour depth on my desktop from 16 to 256 and then back to 32. It was required for a screen saver I wanted to try.
That'll learn me.

Getting it back should be easy enough. Get into MS-DOS Mode adn type scanreg /restore. Pick a previous date to restore and there it is. If you now have your idiosyncrasy back. Then get a reg tool that allows you to compare registry changes and you should know the answer after you make the changes to your display settings and compare.
Good Luck

I had the same issue with 5.0...I personally feel it was only a BUG that occurs in remote instances.

As for why, well, I can only speculate that it occurs when a desktop feature is triggered, Or a resolution change....I noticed it happening to me when I opened the desktop properties and made changes.

Sorry I can't be of more assistance.

Thanks. You have at least given me a similar
story to my own (with the desktop properties)
it's not that desirable for me to go into my registry but I appreciate the replies.

The only error I came across in IE is the poxy javascript command
javascript:resizeTo(x,y,);
That wonderful piece of code was on some home page I visited and it resized my window to (4000,2000) or something stupid like that, the only was I could get to the close button was to keep on dragging it across the screen until I got to the three boxes at the top of the tool bar, anyway since then every time I have my window in restore mode it buggers off the left hand side of my screen so I cant get to it. Eventually solved the problem by maximising the window typing in javascript then restoring so window dissapears off side of screen the running script to get window back. Thanks Mr. Smug B*stard who thought it would be clever to do that on there homepage!!!!

Doesn't help me much but it was a great story anyway.
I might put a page up with that feature so I can direct miscreants there. ;-)

Hey dgardner,

Not sure if I'm understanding you correctly, but there is a much easier way of dealing with a window which is way off screen. This can be useful when you have changed your resolution from very big, back to something smaller, like 640x480. Just use your keyboard commands to access the control menu of the window. Something like: alt+tab to get to the offending window, then hit alt, space to open the control menu, then choose you command - s and then arrows to resize, or m and then arrows to move it. And as you no doubt already know, alt+f4 will close the current window.
Sorry if I'm getting you wrong, and this was not you problem at all!

No probs. And no, not my homepage, but yes I have had quite a few occaisions where things have been "off screen", and windows does not make it immediately obvious how to get them back.

Meanwhile, apologies to BITM@D that this wasn't relevant to you original post!
