Does anyone have any suggestions for making my PC quieter. I've got a Cyrix MII 333 and the whole kaboodle is very noisy. The CPU fan seems to be the primary culprit although I don't think the other components are particularly quiet. Would a different CPU fan be any quieter?

I am noticing a similar problem on my new home built unit. There are two fans, but they don't especially bother me. The thing I don't like is that it rattles like an old car. You'd think that a machine with so few moving parts wouldn't rattle so much. Maybe I should put all the screws to the panels back in, but I keep having to get inside.

When you say other components, what do you mean? I like to hear the HD and the floppy going when they are in use. My CD-ROM is a nuisance, I always make sure that there is no CD in it when I am not using it. Someone keeps banging on the keyboard ... oh wait, that's ME.

You know, your power supply also has a fan. Maybe that is the real source of your fan noise.

For rattling, that's a sign that stuff isn't screwed in tight enough to your case. Get in there with a Phillips screwdriver and tighten up the screws/add screws if possible to the noisy drive.

For fan noise, 2cooltek has an article about some stuff that would help you.

I'm having the same woes.

I'm thinking on changing the power supply and/or the CPU fan.

There are quieter ones out there, they just cost more.

I don't have any noisy hard drives,
(Maxtor 2880, 4320. Quantum CR)

and my CDs are very quiet
(Teac 56s SCSI, Creative Labs 5x DVD/24x CD)

Here's a place that sells really quiet power supplies

I'm still looking for the quiet CPU fan/hetasinks (Celeron 300a Slot 1)...
